Mets Minors Recap: Jonah Tong Strikes Out Seven For Syracuse

Jack Wenninger had yet another poor outing as Syracuse split its doubleheader, Mitch Voit stole two bases in a Binghamton loss, Jacob Reimer hit a home run in support of Emilio Obispo‘s first start in Brooklyn, Elian Peña notched two hits in a St. Lucie loss and Wandy Asigen hit his second home run in as many days for DSL Mets Orange.

Triple-A

Ryan Clifford had the first game of the day off, and Christian Arroyo, playing first base, went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Christopher Morel has been effective since he was signed to a minor league deal, posting a .970 OPS.

Tong put together his third straight start in which he allowed fewer than three earned runs while having his best start since May 1. It’s great to see the strikeout numbers and limiting hits. He was much more efficient with his pitches too, throwing nearly two-thirds for strikes. With the trade of A.J. Minter, it looks as if Nate Lavender or Yan would be the first call-up to fill the need for a lefty in a bullpen. Yan may have the advantage as he is already on the 40-man roster, but both pitchers have been striking batters out in bunches, with Lavender exhibiting much better control while Yan allows fewer hits.

Clifford returned for game two, and his nightmare season continued. With the Mets’ first base situation being in flux, this was the prospect’s chance to grab a hold of it, but his strikeout numbers and his slugging percentage have both been trending in the wrong direction for months. Clifford is on pace to eclipse his strikeout total from 2025 in 100-plus fewer at-bats.

Wenninger has also had a forgettable 2026 season that has seen his control vanish. Wenninger has already walked eight more batters than he did in 2025 in 49 fewer innings. Núñez has struck out 10 batters in July while allowing a .184 batting average for the month, making him a great sleeper to get the call-up to Flushing in the next week.

Double-A

Binghamton had three hits but eight walks while going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Corey Collins has acclimated himself well to Double-A, posting a 1.082 OPS, albeit in a small sample size.

In a bullpen game, Gabriel Rodriguez struggled, allowing four runs on two hits with two walks over two-thirds of an inning. Douglas Orellana struck out two batters in two innings of work.
