All four Mets minor league affiliates were in action on Wednesday, and following suit with their parent organization, they could not find a way to pull off a win. The Rumble Ponies dropped to even on the season (5-5) while each of the other squads is under .500. There were, however, some bright spots amongst the games, highlighted by Randy Guzman and Christian Scott.
Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (10-7) 4, Syracuse Mets (8-9) 1
Box Score
- RHP Christian Scott: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 5 K (5.27 ERA)
- RHP Ryan Lambert: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K (3.00 ERA)
- CF Nick Morabito: 1-4, HR (3), K, RBI
- RF Ryan Clifford: 1-4, K
The eyes were on Christian Scott today as he took the mound for Syracuse against the RailRiders. He navigated their lineup fairly well and came two outs short of a quality start, striking out five along the way. Ernesto Martinez Jr., the RailRiders’ designated hitter, took Scott deep in the second inning to give the opposing squad a 2-0 lead. Spencer Jones was responsible for the other run against Scott with an RBI double in the first, but Scott settled down to pitch into the sixth before giving way to Alex Carrillo. The Mets mustered just five hits, highlighted by a Nick Morabito home run late in the game.
Double-A
Akron RubberDucks (7-4) 3, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-5), 0
Box Score
- LHP Zach Thornton: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 6 K (2.61 ERA)
- RHP Ben Simon: 1.0 IP, H, BB, ER, K (3.60 ERA)
- C Kevin Parada: 1-3, K
- 1B Christopher Suero: 0-1, 2 BB
- 3B Jacob Reimer: 0-2, BB
- SS Marco Vargas: 0-2, BB, SB (4)
The Rumble Ponies combined for just a single hit off the bat of Kevin Parada in their 3-0 loss to the RubberDucks. Christopher Suero reached base twice with two walks, and Marco Vargas swiped a bag, but that was just about all she wrote for this one. Zach Thornton continued solid work so far in AA this year by giving up just two earned runs over his stint, while striking out six. He is currently allowing a mere .184 batting average against.
High-A
Greensboro Grasshoppers (8-3) 15, Brooklyn Cyclones (3-7) 4
Box Score
- RHP Channing Austin: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 BB, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K (3.68 ERA)
- RHP Tanner Witt: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 R, 5 ER (74.25 ERA)
- SS Antonio Jimenez: 1-5, HR (1), RBI, K
- C Ronald Hernandez: 1-4, RBI, BB
- DH Daiverson Gutierrez: 1-3, R, 2 BB
A rough day for the Cyclones pitching staff overshadowed Antonio Jimenez‘s first career MiLB home run as they gave up 15 runs off 15 hits. Cristofer Gomez and Trace Willhoite (yes, the third basemen) were the only ones with scoreless outings as a total of six pitchers took the mound for the Cyclones alongside the aforementioned Willhoite. Tanner Witt caught the brunt of the damage, ballooning his ERA up to 74.25 in the early going. Colin Houck managed an RBI hit, but he was also responsible for an error that led to unearned runs crossing the plate.
Low-A
Daytona Tortugas (4-7) 17, St. Lucie Mets (5-6) 13
Box Score
- LHP Nicolas Carreno: 3.1 IP, H, BB, 0 ER, 7 K (3.38 ERA)
- RHP Omar Victorino: 1.0 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 9 ER, K (12.38 ERA)
- RHP Tyler McLoughlin: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 5 ER, 3 K (12.00 ERA)
- 1B Randy Guzman: 3-5, 3B, 2 HR (2), 5 RBI, 3 R
- SS Elian Peña: 1-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SB (5)
A combined 30 runs crossed the plate in this game off 25 combined hits in a sloppy, high-scoring affair where the St. Lucie Mets committed five errors in total. Nicolas Carreno started this game strongly for St. Lucie, striking out seven batters and keeping the Tortugas off the board. However, it was all downhill from there, as Tyler McLoughlin coughed up five runs and Omar Victorino was rocked for nine earned runs in just one inning of work, where he allowed five hits and walked three batters. A 13-run Mets performance was highlighted by Randy Guzman, Elian Peña and Branny De Oleo. Guzman shook off some early struggles with a three-hit performance, two of them leaving the ballpark, and a total of five RBI for the game. Peña continued to impress early on across the board, with a double and a stolen base. His OPS stands at .926 so far.
