As baseball fans, we know offenses are streaky, but that knowledge doesn’t make the slumps any easier to sit through. So when the breakout finally comes, it’s just oh-so-sweet.
After going 9-for-54 with runners in scoring position over their last seven games, the Mets offense finally broke out of its funk on Wednesday night.
New York plated five runs on 10 hits to avoid a sweep in Boston, with four different players logging multi-hit games.
After scratching across a run in the second on a faltered rally, the bats came alive in the seventh, when the Mets pushed three runs across the plate. Brett Baty led the way, driving in the game’s first run with a single and later lacing another base hit with the bags loaded to bring home two more.

Brett Baty: Lefty Killer?
Carlos Mendoza needed a spark, but before first pitch, many Mets fans were raising eyebrows when Baty got the start against Garrett Crochet — one of the toughest left-handed arms in baseball.
Baty’s platoon splits are no secret. Heading into the game, he had 82 plate appearances against righties and just eight against lefties.
However, Baty has been solid defensively at third, and his offense has been trending way up in May: he came into the game with an .813 OPS on the month.
The gamble paid off. Baty smoked a 97 MPH fastball into center to open the scoring in the second, then worked a tough 2-2 count against lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino before slicing a ball into the left-field corner to bring home two more.
“Now, there’s something about the way he’s carrying himself on and off the field, in the clubhouse, the way he prepares. Even when he’s 0-for, you can see the way he’s playing defense. That’s what you want to see out of everyone”

His recent surge is a great sign for Mets fans. His xwOBA is finally above league average for the first time this season, and both his barrel rate and bat speed are in the top third of the league.
Let’s Talk About Soto
Juan Soto, the current face of New York baseball media, added another RBI Wednesday with a long sacrifice fly (roughly 370 feet) to one of the deepest parts of Fenway. He also drew another walk.

Is he slumping? Sure, but let’s be honest: if this is what a slump looks like, what are we even complaining about?
His OPS: .803
His BA: .244
His xBA: .309
His SLG: .432
His xSLG: .596
His Batting Run-Value: Top 10% in MLB
This is during the worst stretch he’s had in years.
Need more perspective? Remember how Mike Piazza started his Mets career? Or Carlos Beltrán? Or Lindor? Slumps happen. Great players power through them.
Soto’s presence alone is helping this team win. His xwOBA as of May 19? .524: top one percent of the league.
He’s struggling, and there are valid questions about his hustle, but the man is doing just fine overall.
Everyone Else Chips In
Luis Torrens deserves some love. The backup catcher has been fantastic. His OPS is pushing .800, he’s hitting near .270, and his hard-hit and barrel rates are both in the top 10% of the league. He’s also throwing out runners left and right.
He added two more hits Wednesday, including a double, scored a run, and drew a walk.
Luisángel Acuña chipped in as well, legging out two hits to bump his average up to .267.
Tyrone Taylor and Pete Alonso each singled and scored. Taylor, quietly, has been excellent in May. His xBA is in the top 25% of the league, and his xwOBA has climbed above average thanks to an OPS near .800 this month.
The Bottom Line
Yes, the offense was dragging over the past week, but this isn’t panic-button territory.
Wednesday’s win was a good sign. With a day off to reset, the hope is that this game lit a spark, and with the mighty Dodgers looming, the timing couldn’t be better.
