The Mets have been dealt a few injury blows this spring, but Brett Baty has continued to shine in his pursuit of a spot on the Opening Day roster. The former first-round pick has transitioned to playing second base, and his bat stayed hot in Wednesday’s win against the Astros.

In Baty’s first at-bat of the night, Baty drove a 3-2 pitch from Ronel Blanco into right field for a double, his fourth of the spring. Baty came around to score on Jose Altuve‘s error three batters later.

In the fourth inning, Baty roped a line drive past a diving Jon Singleton for a triple, bringing Luis Torrens home with the third run of the game. The RBI raised Baty’s total to six this spring, to go along with his team-leading seven extra-base hits.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Baty laid out and fired on one knee to Pete Alonso to take away a hit on a sharply hit ground ball by Yordan Alvarez.

Baty was removed from the game after grounding out in the top of the sixth inning.

At the end of Wednesday’s action, Baty has a .333/.391/.619 batting line in 46 plate appearances in Grapefruit League play. His 1.010 OPS is second on the team among players with at least 30 plate appearances this spring, trailing only Juan Soto. Baty has also shown that he’s getting comfortable playing second base, and with Jeff McNeil beginning the season on the injured list, the 25-year-old is slated to receive a bulk of the playing time at the position. Baty has struggled to do much with his opportunities so far in his major league career, but this is his chance to do what Mark Vientos did in 2024.
