The struggling Edwin Díaz was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement, the Mets announced Wednesday. The closer has blown four saves and pitched to a 5.40 ERA after missing last season with an injury.
Lefty Josh Walker, who was just optioned earlier to make room on the active roster for David Peterson, was recalled to take the roster spot created by Díaz going on the IL.
Díaz lost his closer role after giving up four runs in 1/3 of an inning in the ninth against the Miami Marlins on May 18. He returned to the job against the San Francisco Giants one week later and blew a save. That was his last outing before this trip to the IL.
The Mets will likely try to fill Díaz’s role with some combination of Adam Ottavino, Jórge Lopez or Reed Garrett, all of whom have had their own problems in recent weeks.
