So much pain.

Edwin Díaz was placed on the injured list before the game, Pete Alonso got hurt during it and the Mets were left licking their wounds after a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field. The Dodgers swept the three-game series and sent New York (22-33) to its eighth loss in nine games.

It has been a miserable month of May for the Mets. They’ve gone 7-19 and haven’t won two in a row since May 7. Only four teams in the majors entered Wednesday with a lower winning percentage.

Alonso left the game after he was hit on the right hand by a James Paxton pitch in the first inning. He was flexing the hand at first base as the trainer checked it out before he left. The SNY broadcast reported that he had undergone imaging, but results were not immediately available.

Alonso was replaced at first base by Mark Vientos, who started the game at third base. Brett Baty came off the bench to play third.

Will Smith hit two solo homers for Los Angeles (36-22), his first coming in the second inning off David Peterson, who was making his season debut after being sidelined following offseason hip surgery. Peterson gave up three runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked one.

“Excited to have him back,” manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters before the game. “Know how hard he worked through the whole process. And now he’s getting opportunity.”

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, Tomás Nido broke a 20-inning scoring drought with a two-run homer to left. J.D. Martinez added an RBI double later in the inning to tie the game at 3.

But Smith’s second long ball— off Adam Ottavino, who blew a save on Tuesday — broke the tie in the eighth. Miguel Rojas added an RBI single with the infield in that chased Ottavino, who faced five batters and retired one. Jorge Lopez came on and gave up a two-run double to Miguel Vargas and a two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani as the Dodgers plated six runs in the frame.

Lopez was then ejected for arguing with third base umpire Ramon De Jesus after the Mets didn’t get the call on a Freddie Freeman check swing. A frustrated Lopez threw his glove high in the air, over the protective netting and into the crowd as he left the field. The Dodgers had 16 hits, the most the Mets have given up in a game this year.

Díaz was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. The closer has not regained his elite 2022 form, blowing four saves in nine attempts. He lost his job after his worst outing of the year on May 18 in Miami, when he gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning. Given a chance to close again a week later, he blew a save against the San Francisco Giants. His May ERA was 8.68 over 9 1/3 innings.
