1969: About two years after being named Mets GM and ten weeks after the Miracle Mets won the 1969 world series, Johnny Murphy suffered a heart attack that eventually caused fatal coronary occlusion. Murphy also had a successful MLB career as a player, saving 107 games across 13 seasons for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. To honor his legacy, the Mets have been giving the annual Johnny Murphy award to the top rookie during spring training since 1972.
