New York Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman was placed on the bereavement list ahead of Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals following the death of his grandmother. Sean Reid-Foley was called up from Triple-A to take his roster spot.
Mets manager Luis Rojas said Sunday the righty would be away from the team for an unspecified amount of time to attend to the family matter. Once on the bereavement list, Stroman has to miss a minimum of three games, meaning he can return to the team as soon as Thursday or any time after that.
There’s no word on when Stroman will make his next start, but that’s the least of his and the team’s concerns at this point.

Pitching with a heavy heart and mind, Stroman threw three innings on Sunday and allowed four runs (two earned) to the Phillies. He seemed physically healthy after leaving his previous start with a hip injury. His control just wasn’t there.
On Friday, Stroman looked inward and posted his thoughts on Instagram after both of his grandmothers passed away in a short amount of time:
“Losing both grandmas way too soon puts life in perspective,” he wrote. “What’s truly important on this journey of life? Are we feeding our vices and neglecting our values? Do we stress for the wrong reasons? Should we stress at all when life is so fragile? Praying my family continues to find to get through all adversary, as we continually do. Love you grandma and Mamá!”
Stroman is 6-6 with a 2.45 ERA in 16 starts this season.
Other Press Conference Notes
Luis Rojas said Brandon Nimmo won’t be activated Tuesday before the Atlanta series, but rather Friday ahead of the Subway Series with the Yankees.
There is no issue with pain in Nimmo’s hand, Rojas said, but the team wants him to get more at-bats ahead of activation.
Rojas also said they’re going to give Taijuan Walker a couple extra days rest ahead of his next start. He’ll start Friday against the Yankees and David Peterson will start Wednesday against the Braves on regular rest.
He noted wanting to keep Walker fresh after his heavy workload to start the year. He’s second on the team in innings pitched with 79.1 in 14 starts. Walker had only thrown 67.1 the previous three seasons due to Tommy John surgery, so they’ll surely be careful with the righty in the following months to make sure he’s fresh for the run leading up to (and hopefully during) the playoffs.
