The New York Mets are currently exploring all of their options on the free agent market and a big splash is likely coming soon. As reported by SNY’s Andy Martino this morning, James McCann may be the next signing the Mets make but it will likely just be a prerequisite to something much bigger.
According to Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Mets are closing in on signing either George Springer or Trevor Bauer.
Klapisch notes that Steve Cohen is more interested in signing Springer, whereas Sandy Alderson is focused on adding more pitching with Bauer. There is a chance they could end up signing both, but for now the expectation is that the Mets will land at least one of the star free agents.
Coming into this offseason, the Mets had some clear needs that had to be addressed if they wanted to contend next season.
There was obviously a great need to add pitching depth to both their bullpen and their starting rotation, which they have already begun to address with the signings of Marcus Stroman, Trevor May, Sam McWilliams and a slew of minor league additions.
The Mets also had to improve up the middle, with catcher and center field being the biggest areas of need.
If New York comes away from the Winter Meetings with some combination of McCann, Springer and/or Bauer, this offseason could already be deemed a success.
