David Stearns
Steve Cohen and Sandy Alderson are already working to fill the front office vacancies. According to MLB, they have reached out to the Brewers to speak with David Stearns, their president of baseball operations, about taking on that same role with the Mets.
But, the request has been denied.
This likely isn’t something personal with the Mets. It is common for organizations not to allow permission for their executives to interview with other clubs for the same role.
Before the 2019 season, Stearns signed a multi-year contract extension. This included a promotion to his current role.
Stears actually grew up in New York as a Mets fan. After his graduation from Harvard, he worked for the Mets in their baseball operations departments.
Where does this leave the Mets front office now? Well, so far, we know that they have interviewed former Marlins president Michael Hill for the president of baseball operations.
We also know that the Rays senior VP of baseball ops/GM Erik Neander is “almost certainty” not leaving Tampa Ray. We also have learned that Athletics GM David Forst and Indians president of baseball ops Chris Antonetti have both declined interview with the Angels for “personal reasons.”
However, that does not mean that it would “preclude them from talking to the Mets.”
