The hot stove season is here (kind of) folks! A grand total of 147 players became free agents all at once on Wednesday afternoon, a list that included 11 Mets. The list has continued to grow from there, with teams deciding on player options including the Mets declining Wilson Ramos, Robinson Chirinos, and Todd Frazier
Instead, the Mets will pay the trio a combined $4 million in buyouts. Other teams around the league were making decisions on team options, let’s take a look at the bigger ones.
Marte Sticking With Fish
The Associated Press reported early on Wednesday morning that the Marlins were picking up the $12.5 million option on center fielder Starling Marte. The 32-year-old hit .281/.340/.440 with 14 doubles, six home runs, 27 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases in 2020 between the Diamondbacks and Marlins.
Marte went 2-for-4 in the first game of the playoffs for the Marlins, though that’s where his season ended after a hit by pitch fractured a bone in his hand. The former long-time Pirate will now become a free agent after the 2021 season.
Nationals Cut Ties With Multiple Veterans
Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reported that the Nationals have declined team options on 1B/DH Eric Thames, UT Howie Kendrick, RHP Anibal Sanchez, and OF Adam Eaton. All of the former productive veterans struggled in 2020, with none of them posting a positive WAR.
Eaton is the youngest of the group at 31, and had an OPS+ of at least 100 from 2014 through 2019. He’s been a below average outfielder though in terms of defensive runs saved each of the past four seasons.

Wong Hits Free Agency After Extension Talks Fail
Despite still being one of the best defensive second basemen in baseball, Kolten Wong had his $12.5 million option for the 2021 season declined by the Cardinals according to Jeff Jones of MLB.com.
The 30-year-old hit just .265/.350/.326 with only seven extra base in 208 plate appearances for St. Louis in 2020. The Cardinals had hoped to work out an extension with Wong to keep him in St. Louis longer and lower his salary for 2020.
Wong enters free agency for the first time only one year removed from posting a career-high 5.2 WAR in 2019.
Former Mets Becomes Free Agents
Cesar Puello was once a promising outfield prospect in the Mets farm system, has elected free agency after being outrighted by the Red Sox. Utilityman Jose Peraza and right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey were also outrighted by the Red Sox, with Peraza joining Puello in choosing free agency.
The Rockies declined their portion of a $12 million mutual option on Daniel Murphy. The former Met had a miserable 54 OPS+ in 2020.
Quick Hits
The Twins declined the 2020 option on veteran reliever Sergio Romo. The former closer of the champion Giants had a 4.05 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 20 innings during the abbreviated season this year.
The Diamondbacks declined their options on right-handed pitchers Mike Leake, Hector Rondon and Junior Guerra.
Dee-Strange Gordon and Kendall Graveman both had their 2021 options declined by the Mariners.
Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports that the Phillies have outrighted right-handed Heath Hembree and left-hander Adam Morgan off the 40-man roster.
