The New York Mets have activated reliever Dellin Betances off the injured list for tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Corey Oswalt being optioned to the alternate site as the corresponding move.
Betances was placed on the IL on August 30th with right lat tightness and has been working out of the alternate site in Brooklyn ever since. Now the 32-year-old comes of the IL to finish out the last five games of the season.
This season, Betances has pitched to 6.10 ERA, with just eight strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings pitched. His velocity has been significantly down from where it was through his career pitching for the New York Yankees. Still, Betances only allowed runs in three of his 13 appearances prior to the injury.
For Oswalt this likely marks the end of his 2020 season, as injury problems marred his campaign as well. The right-hander went on the injured list at the end of August with tendinitis in his pitching elbow. Prior to the injury, Oswalt pitched four scoreless innings of relief against the Atlanta Braves on August 25th.
After returning off the IL four days ago, Oswalt made one appearance and recorded two outs at the end of the Mets 7-0 loss to the Braves on Sunday. For the year, Oswalt pitched to a 4.85 ERA, with 11 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.
