We are not sure yet when (or if) baseball is coming back in 2020. But, as negotiations between the league and the Players Association increase, so do Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis’s workouts.
On Wednesday’s episode of SNY’s The Cookie Club, the two spoke about their workout regimes and how they have upped activity.
Davis, who was taken out of February 25th’s Spring Training game with a minor shoulder injury but was expected to be ready for what would’ve been opening day, talked about his current workout and how excited he is going to be when he gets the call that baseball activities will resume.
“Right now what I’m doing (is) I’m getting more balls off the machine. Getting ready, swinging a little bit harder, making sure I do some more sprints, some more long distance stuff. Definitely ramping it up here, definitely getting the itch. The month before it was kind of that mystery of when we’re gonna start, but now it’s becoming a little more clear that it’s gonna start here in the next couple of weeks. I have no idea, I don’t make those decisions, but I’m excited for that phone call.”
Smith, who you may remembered hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the last Mets game of 2019 (and his first appearance at the plate in over two months due to injury), said he also “ramped up” his activity “a little bit.” How? By
“[t]aking more fly balls at a higher intensity, running more sprints at a higher intensity.” He also went on to say that he has “had the luxury to see some live arms, so I’ve been able to get pretty ready for the season. I got the itch and I’ve been having the itch for a while now, and I can’t wait till we’re all back together doing the one thing we all love.”
Those live arms he’s talking about? One of them is Marcus Stroman, as we saw on Instagram earlier during this quarantine.

It is pretty safe to say that Davis and Smith are not the only two who are starting to get back in shape for a pending season. But, it is good to hear it from them, how they are preparing, and how much they want baseball to come back, too.
