Jack Curry of YES Network is reporting that former New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances is “likely to sign a one-year deal to boost his value after a lost 2019”, noting dialogue between the right-hander and his former team, as well as Tampa Bay as a potentially interested party.
After working his way back from a right shoulder impingement diagnosis in April, the New York City native tore his Achilles tendon during his return outing on September 15 in Toronto while celebrating his two-strikeout performance — his only appearance of the 2019 season.
Betances, 31, owns a career 2.36 ERA (2.31 FIP) with 14.64 strikeouts and 4.01 walks per nine innings, and 0.61 home runs allowed per nine. His 11.3 wins above replacement (FanGraphs) rank sixth among all MLB relievers since making his debut in 2011 despite missing all of the 2012 and 2019 seasons.
As Curry notes in his tweet, Betances and Mets skipper Carlos Beltran — former teammates in The Bronx — were seen celebrating Beltran’s hire in November (Gabriel De Leon, Overtime Heroics), leading to speculation that Betances could land in Flushing this winter.
SNY‘s Andy Martino initially linked Betances to the Mets in November. We’ll keep you posted with any new developments.
