Curtis Granderson would make an excellent manager for any baseball club. But that is not what he wants.
The former Met went on WFAN’s Joe & Evan last week where the Mets managerial search was a topic of conversation. Evan Roberts asked Granderson if he would be open to the possibility of becoming a manager. Granderson responded by saying “No chance.” That settles that then.
Most baseball fans would agree that Granderson is a great leader who would go on to be a great manager. He has left an impact on both the players and fans of every ballclub that he has played for, and then some. He already leads by example, without even having to try.
As Mets fans, we saw this firsthand multiple times. Just one great example is during Spring Training in 2016 where he urged his teammates to stay hungry and not just think that because they were in the World Series the prior year that it would simply happen again.
Why doesn’t he want to take a shot at managing then? Granderson cited the lack of job security as one main reason.
He also brought up a good point, after Joe Benigno made a remark about managers being “puppets.” “If we’re going to let the general manager have so much say in the lineup, then pre and post-game have them also do the interviews with the manager,” Granderson said. He’s not wrong. And from how it sounds, Granderson has no desire to be a puppet, nor should he.
