When the Mets selected the contract of Paul Sewald on August 16 it was simply the latest shuffling of the final bullpen spot that hopefully only sees work in blowouts.

Instead, after his initial outing back, Sewald has pitched in a couple of key spots and he’s very effective doing so.

The 29-year-old has allowed only one run in seven innings since returning to the Mets. During that span he has allowed four hits and struck out a whopping 13 batters compared to only one walk.

He picked up the save last Thursday, pitched a scoreless inning the day in the 12th inning of a tie game, and on Thursday night gave the Mets much-needed two scoreless innings following the Noah Syndergaard implosion.

When Sewald was with the Mets in April and May his average fastball velocity was 89 mph and he’s been averaging 92.45 mph on his fastball since coming back. His slider velocity is up three miles per hour as well.
