The New York Mets (59-56) completed a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins (42-71) with a 7-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets have now won six straight games and 13 of their last 14.

Pitching

Steven Matz (7-7, 4.49 ERA) got the start as he looked to rebound from a performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 2 in which he allowed five runs in 3.2 innings. He did exactly that against the Marlins as he limited them to two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Matz got in and out of trouble throughout his start as evidenced by the seven hits and two walks he allowed. However, a double play in the first and fourth innings helped limit the damage.

The most trouble he got into was in the second inning when gave up an RBI single to Lewis Brinson with no outs. However, Matz also got help from Brinson who was caught trying to make it to second on the play. Matz then rebounded and got out of the inning without allowing any additional runs.

Matz was pulled in the seventh in favor of Justin Wilson after giving up a two-out double to Bryan Holaday. Wilson gave up a single to Martin Prado before striking out Jon Berti to escape the inning unscatched.

Jeurys Familia pitched the eighth inning for the Mets. He pitched a shutout frame and only allowed one walk.

Luis Avilan came into the game in the ninth and tossed a perfect inning to end the game.

Offense

The Mets offense faced Jordan Yamamoto (4-3, 4.17 ERA) who was making his 10th career start.

Pete Alonso wasted no time against Yamamoto as he hit his 37th home run of the season on a line drive to left center field to put the Mets up 2-0 in the first inning.

Michael Conforto followed suit in the third inning as he hit a two-run homer on a fly ball to right field to give the Mets a 4-1 lead.

After being limited to two singles and a hit by pitch over the next three innings, the Mets flexed their power again in the seventh inning against Jose Quijada. Aaron Altherr hit a one-out double before Jeff McNeil unloaded on the next pitch for a home run to center field. Conforto then capped off the Mets’ power show as he hit a solo shot to left center field for his second homer of the game, to put the Mets up 7-2.

Conforto, Alonso and McNeil fueled the Mets offense by going a combined 4-for-10 with four home runs, five runs scored and seven RBIs.

On Deck

The Mets will have an off day on Thursday before starting a critical series at Citi Field with the Washington Nationals. Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.07 ERA) will make his Citi Field debut likely against Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72 ERA).

Depending on how the series goes, the Mets could hold a 1.5 game lead over the Nationals or be as far back as 5.5 games behind them. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT, with coverage on SNY, WCBS 880 and ESPN Deportes 1050.
