Jeurys Familia took the mound in game action for the first time since being placed on the 10-day IL on June 18 with a Bennett Lesion in his right shoulder.
Familia, 30, pitched for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Friday night at MCU Park and faired well in his first rehab appearance.
In the top of the sixth inning, Cyclones’ starter Matt Cleveland allowed Joe Davis of the Lowell Spinners to reach base, which ended his start for the night.
That ended up being the time that Edgardo Alfonzo put in Jeurys Familia, which he later said was an order by Jeremy Accardo, who was in the dugout with the team despite currently serving as a pitching specialist for the New York Mets.
Familia proceeded to strikeout Nicholas Northcut on three pitches and then induce a weak groundout from Wil Dalton. To end the inning, the right-handed reliever struck out Jonathan Diaz.
Instead of being pulled after the inning, Familia went out to record one more out as he got Ricardo Cubillan to ground out before being replaced by southpaw, Andrew Edwards.
In total, Familia threw 1 1/3 innings in which he struck out two batters while not allowing any baserunners.
Familia has struggled mightily this season with the Mets after signing a three-year, $30 million contract this past offseason. In 29 appearances (27 2/3 innings), Familia has an atrocious 7.81 ERA, 6.11 FIP, and 1.843 WHIP to go along with 28 strikeouts.
It remains to be determined as to what Familia’s next step will be as Alfonzo said that will be decided by Accardo.
