This past week, the Mets opened their schedule with a Subway Series double header, after Monday’s game against the Yankees was rained out. The Mets would split that double header before getting another off day on Wednesday, leading into a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Despite taking a lead into the eighth inning in three of the four games against St. Louis (as well as being tied late in the fourth game), the Mets bullpen was abysmal, losing three games to drop another series. Like he has been for most of the season, Seth Lugo was the lone bright spot coming out of the pen for New York, while J.D. Davis had his first great week in over a month.
Pitcher of the Week – Seth Lugo
When it comes to the Mets bullpen this season, Seth Lugo has been the lone rose that has grown in the middle of a sewer. Of the pitchers that have thrown over 10 innings out of the pen for the Mets this season, Lugo is the only one with an ERA under 3.00. In fact, Lugo’s 2.36 ERA is well over a full point better than Edwin Diaz, who has the second-best mark at 3.77.
This week, Lugo continued his scoreless month of June by making three great appearances. His first was on Tuesday, in the second game of the Mets double header against the Yankees. Pitching with a 9-3 lead Lugo’s stuff was electric, as he struck out the side in order. Lugo made his next appearance in the first game of the Cardinals series, once again pitching a perfect eighth inning as he bridged the gap to Diaz. Diaz would not hold that lead though, blowing the rain-delay fiasco of a game on Thursday night.
Finally, Lugo’s last appearance came in the Mets lone victory over the Cardinals Saturday night. After striking out Yadier Molina to start the inning, Lugo found himself in trouble as Kolten Wong hit a single and promptly stole second base. Lugo would walk two batters, but struck out the other two he faced to escape the jam unscathed.
Lugo’s line for the week: 3 IP, H, HBP, 2 BB, 7 K
Dating back to April 22, Lugo has allowed just one run across 21 2/3 innings pitched for a minuscule 0.42 ERA.

Player of the Week – J.D. Davis
With the play of Todd Frazier at third base and the use of Dominic Smith in left field, J.D. Davis had been relegated to more of a bench role as of late. This week, Davis was given four starts and he took full advantage of those opportunities, recording a hit in each game.
In Game 2 of the double header on Tuesday, Davis went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. In his next start on Saturday, Davis followed that up with maybe the best game of his career. Davis was a triple short of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
All told, Davis’ stats for the week were as follows: .400/.400/.750, 8 H, 2 HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 5 R, 2 K
With the Mets embarking on a long road trip and against two tough competitors this week, let’s hope these two can stay hot and rub off on the rest of team.
