RHP Jacob deGrom (3-5, 3.71) vs. RHP Zack Greinke (6-2, 2.78)
SNY • WCBS 880 AM • ESPN 1050 AM
The Mets still have a chance to come out winning more games than losing on this road trip, but it depends on winning tonight. Yesterday, the Mets went up early by a score of 3-0 and they seemed to be in cruise control and the Diamondbacks took the lead in the middle of the game by the score of 4-3. But these Mets showed fight, got two more runs and ended the game in the win column! Now Jacob deGrom will try to keep the good times rolling.

Jacob is 3-5 over 11 games and 63 innings with a 3.71 ERA, 3.56 FIP, 1.175 WHIP, and 109 ERA+. He’s coming off an average start against the Dodgers where he held them to two runs over five innings despite allowing seven hits and a walk and only striking out two but the bullpen couldn’t keep the game together behind him.
Overall in May, he allowed 13 runs, 12 earned over 37 innings, a 2.92 ERA with opponents batting .213 against him. If you take out his one bad start where he allowed seven runs, six earned, over five innings, he allowed six runs over 32 innings. Jacob faced the Diamondbacks once last year allowing one run over seven innings from six hits and no walks while striking out 13. The D-backs have the following stats against him:
- Zack Greinke 2-for-5
- Alex Avila 2-for-6, 4 K
- Adam Jones 0-for-5, BB, K
- Jake Lamb 1-for-6, 2B, 3 K
- David Peralta 1-for-5, 2 K
- Jarrod Dyson 2-for-5
The Mets bats draw Zack Greinke who is having a resurgent year. He is 6-2 over 12 games and 77.2 innings with a 2.78 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 0.876 WHIP, and 162 ERA+. His numbers are due in large part to his month of May where he started 5 games pitching 33.2 innings with a 2.14 ERA and an opponents’ batting average of .192.
In his first four starts of the season, he allowed eight homers, since then he has allowed only two. He missed the Mets completely last year and in 2017 had a lackluster start allowing four runs over 6.2 innings from five hits and two walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Todd Frazier 4-for-24, 2B, 3B, HR, 3 BB, 7 K
- Carlos Gomez 3-for-23, 2B, HR, BB, 10 K
- Michael Conforto 1-for-12, HR, 2 K
- Wilson Ramos 2-for-9, 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
- Adeiny Hechavarria 2-for-9, 2B, K
- Juan Lagares 1-for-8, HR, K
- Aaron Altherr 2-for-6, HR, 2 BB
Game Notes
New York has 11 one-run wins, including last night, tied for the third-most in the majors. Only the Giants (13) and Padres (14) have more.
This is Jacob deGrom’s third straight start facing a former Cy Young Award winner. On May 22, he opposed Washington’s Max Scherzer at Citi Field and on May 27, he faced off against the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw. DeGrom also faced Scherzer on Opening Day, March 28 in Washington.
New York had 13 hits last night. The club has had double-digit hits in four of its last five games and in 25 games overall, the fifth-most such games in the majors this year. Colorado is first with 29.
Dominic Smith leads Mets hitters with a .395 (15-38) batting average on the road. He owns a .489 OBP away from Citi Field with four extra-base hits, six RBI and seven walks. Overall, Smith has produced a .362/.471/.534 slash line with six extra-base hits, seven RBI and 11 walks.
Todd Frazier is 11-for-30 (.367) with seven runs scored, two doubles, one homer, two walks and three RBI over his last seven games, which include five multi-hit efforts. Frazier is hitting .352 (19-54) with four doubles, one triple, one homer, four RBI, 10 runs scored and six walks over his last 15 games. This compares to a .148 (8-54) batting average with two runs, two home runs, and seven RBI over his first 18 games of the season.
The Mets had homered in each of their last 16 games at Chase Field before being held without a long ball last night. That was the longest home run streak in team history at any venue. The club’s next longest streak was 15 games at Shea Stadium, set in 1996 and tied in 2006…Research courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau.
Let’s Go Mets!
