Michael Conforto returned from the seven-day injured injured list (concussion) on Sunday and while the team won the first game he was back, the team had yet to feel his true presence back in the lineup.
On Tuesday night that changed, as the outfielder drove in five runs to help secure a 7-3 victory for the Mets over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Conforto, 26, made his biggest impact in the seventh inning as the Dodgers bullpen struggled mightily and loaded the bases for the left-handed hitter. To try and counter that, the team brought in southpaw Scott Alexander.
However, that decision backfired as Conforto took an 0-1 pitch opposite field over the wall for a grand slam which broke a 2-2 tie at the time.
For the night, he went 1-for-4 with the grand slam, an RBI groundout, and two walks.
While Conforto obviously deserves all the credit in the world for that grand slam, which was the first of his career, there is another player on the Mets that deserves some praise too, as detailed by Tim Healey of Newsday.
Before the at-bat against Alexander, Robinson Cano went up to Conforto and told him “[Alexander’s] going to try to drop that thing under your barrel, so you just got to get it up.”
Obviously, as Conforto mentioned afterward, that was “good advice, for sure,” and Cano was the first one to rush to Conforto after he hit that grand slam and went “I told you, I told you” to the younger left-handed slugger.
Afterward, Conforto told Cano in front of Chili Davis that Cano “is [his] new hitting coach” and that Cano would “be by [his] side until he’s back on the active roster.”
Cano has been on the 10-day IL with a left quad strain since last Thursday after injuring himself running to first base the night prior and won’t be eligible to return until this weekend, despite making the trip to the west coast with the club.
Anyways, the Mets will be hoping to get similar production from Conforto going forward. This season has gone well so far for the outfielder as he is hitting .266/.407/.526 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI to give himself a 156 OPS+ on the year.
