The New York Mets entered the season with what they thought was going to be one of the best trio of starters in baseball. That had not been the case through April 26 with a 5.17 ERA as a group that was the second highest in he National League.

Steven Matz started the string of good starts on April 28 vs the Brewers when he went seven innings allowing only two runs. He used his curveball more effectively, getting three strikeouts with the pitch after coming into the game with two on the breaker.

Next up was a solid start by Zack Wheeler against the Reds allowing four runs in six innings. Certainly not a start up to the caliber of Wheeler’s 2018 season, but it kept the Mets in the game.

Veteran Jason Vargas would follow that up with his best start of the 2019 season, 5.1 innings of one-run ball with a season high five strikeouts. It was the first this season he had pitched into the sixth inning.

The 2019 season has been an odd one for Jacob deGrom. The 2018 NL Cy Young winner was coming off three starts of lasting five innings or less while allowing at least three runs. He looked like a different pitcher on May 1 against the Reds when he pitched seven scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out six.

Noah Syndergaard capped the strong streak of starting pitcher performances with the best of all. The struggling right-hander threw a complete game shutout and hit a solo homer for the only run. He gave up only four hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters.

Their last turn the rotation, the Mets starters posted a 1.83 ERA in 35.1 innings. They lowered their team starters ERA from 5.32 to 4.59 thanks to the good stretch.
