
It was a pitchers duel at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie as Noah Syndergaard and Gerrit Cole faced off on Wednesday afternoon. In the end, the New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros by a final score of 2-1. (Box Score)
Pitching:
Noah Syndergaard pitched excellent in his fourth star of the spring. He lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on two hits while walking two and striking out five, including All-Star Alex Bregman twice.
Ryan O’Rourke got the last out in the sixth after coming on in relief of Syndergaard. He was easily able to get outfielder Michael Brantley to groundout to first baseman Pete Alonso to end the inning. In his second inning of work, he allowed two hits including an RBI single to Derek Fisher to Houston’s only run of the game.
Seth Lugo pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and he was stellar as usual. He allowed no runs while striking out three against Houston, he now has a 1.04 ERA this spring.
Luis Avilan continued his strong showing this spring, as he struck out one batter, and closed out the game in the top of the ninth to secure the Mets 2-1 win.
Offense:
Gerritt Cole held the Mets hitless through the first three innings. Jeff McNeil then led off the bottom of the fourth with a base hit. Robinson Cano followed that up by poking a two-run shot to dead center to get the Mets offense on the board.
Amed Rosario continued his hot spring at the plate. After going 1-for-3 with a single on the afternoon, he is now hitting .400, he also stole a base.
Wilson Ramos also continued his solid start to the spring, as he went 1 for 3 with a single.
On the afternoon, the Mets were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
On Deck:
The New York Mets will be playing the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. Lefty Steven Matz will be on the mound for the Mets, and he will be opposed by righty Michael Wacha. There will be no broadcast on TV or radio.
