The Mets lost on Wednesday afternoon by a 3-1 score to the Marlins in Jupiter, Florida.

Pitching

Jason Vargas was solid this afternoon against the Miami Marlins in his second spring start. He allowed no earned runs and four hits while striking out two. Mickey Callaway pulled him out after 2 1/3 innings with 47 pitches on his pitch count. Vargas lowered his earned run average to an impressive 2.08.

Luis Avilan entered the game in the third inning and pitched 1 2/3 innings. He gave up one hit, no runs, and struck out four batters in his appearance. The veteran lefty ha yet to allow a run this spring.

Edwin Diaz pitched the fifth inning, the only damage done during his outing was a lead-off bloop double from Rosell Herrera. Other than that, Diaz was able to get out of the inning getting the next three batters while stranding the runner. He struck out two batters in his inning of work.

Robert Gsellman pitched the next two innings. He gave up one run (unearned) which was a game-tying RBI double from shortstop Dixon Machado.

Drew Smith gave up two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Marlins took a 3-1 lead.

Offense

New York scored their first run in the sixth. Danny Espinosa lead-off the inning with a leadoff walk. Keon Broxton moved Espinosa to second on a sacrifice bunt, as Michael Conforto moved Espinosa over as well with a fielders choice groundout from second to third. The next batter J.D. Davis delivered an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Brandon Nimmo went 0-for-4 as the DH. Broxton, Davis, Gregor Blanco, and Dilson Herrera all had a hit and walk in the game.

On Deck

The next scheduled exhibition game for the Metropolitans will be on Thursday. They will be taking on the Washington Nationals for the first time in this early 2019 season. The Mets offense will get a taste of Stephen Strasburg on the mound as he makes the start for the Nats, there is no scheduled pitcher as of yet for New York.
