Well, Wheeler is officially the new deGrom. Wheeler threw another excellent game, going seven innings allowing one run but got saddled with the loss as the Mets offense couldn’t muster anything and the bullpen behind him exploded resulting in a 7-0 Mets loss with only three players getting hits. Meanwhile, in the minors, Alonso went 4-for-4 with two homers and no plans to be called up.

The Mets will try to reverse their fortunes this afternoon first with Steven Matz and then with the bats. Matz is 5-11 over 24 games and 121.2 innings with a 4.36 ERA, 4.74 FIP, 1.307 WHIP and 84 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed three runs over 12.0 innings from seven hits and two walks while striking out 12. That includes a start against the Giants where he allowed two runs over five innings, a game the Mets eventually won. The Giants have the following numbers against Matz:

The Mets bats will try to find themselves in San Fransciso against Derek Holland who is 7-8 over 29 games and 25 starts with 140.2 innings logged. He’s posted a 3.65 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 1.280 WHIP and 109 ERA+. In his last three starts he has pitched 16.0 innings with a 1.13 ERA including an outing against the Mets where he held the Amazin’s to one run over five innings from four hits and a walk. The Giants would win that game 2-1. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Prior to today’s game, the Mets recalled RHP Tim Peterson and RHP Eric Hanhold from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast. Peterson will wear No. 63 and Hanhold will wear No. 70. Peterson, 27, is 2-2 with a 7.54 ERA (19 earned runs/22.2 innings) in 19 games with New York this year. He was 0-1 with eight saves and a 3.49 ERA (15 earned runs/38.2 innings) in 32 games with Las Vegas this year. Hanhold, 24, was 5-3 with eight saves and a 4.20 ERA (23 earned runs/49.1 innings) in 35 minor league games this season. He had 57 strikeouts and allowed two homers all year. His first appearance will be his major league debut. Hanhold was acquired from Milwaukee on September 12, 2017 in exchange for Neil Walker.
