The San Francisco Giants are heading into town to face the New York Mets in a four-game series at Citi Field beginning tonight. Zack Wheeler (8-6, 3.75 ERA) will take the mound against Giants’ left-hander Derek Holland (6-8, 3.83 ERA).
The Mets took the rubber game of their five-game set with the Phillies in the Little League Classic held in Williamsport, PA with an 8-2 victory.
Jason Vargas pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on a Carlos Santana two-run homer in the sixth, with three strikeouts and no walks.
Amed Rosario went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Jeff McNeil added two RBI, and Jose Bautista and Kevin Plawecki drove in a run apiece.

1985 – Dwight Gooden pitched a complete game shutout over the Giants, his 13th consecutive win, striking out 16 batters, to improve to 19-3 on the season.
1989 – The Mets traded Mookie Wilson to the Blue Jays for Jeff Musselman and a minor leaguer, and also acquired hurler Frank Viola from Minnesota in exchange for Rick Aguilera, David West, Kevin Tapani, and two minor leaguers.
