The New York Mets (17-12) were swept by the Atlanta Braves (19-11) with a 11-0 loss Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets fall to 17-12 on the season after starting 11-1 and have lost three straight for the first time in 2018.
Pitching
After giving up nine runs in 3 2/3 innings during his 2018 debut, Jason Vargas (0-2, 16.20 ERA) looked to rebound on Thursday in his second start of the season. While he didn’t have quite as bad of a start as he did against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, this start was anything but successful.
Vargas struggled from the get-go as he gave up a RBI double to Nick Markakis in the first inning and immediately followed that up by allowing a two-run home run from the bat of Kurt Suzuki.
The southpaw gave up four hits and a walk across the next three innings, but managed to keep the Braves off the board.
The wheels came off for a second time in the fifth inning, however. Vargas gave up a leadoff homer to Ronald Acuna Jr. and a two-run homer to Markakis two batters later before recording an out. He was taken out in favor of Matt Harvey after giving up a two-out single to Julio Teheran. Harvey was able to get out of the inning on one pitch.
Vargas ended up allowing six runs on 11 hits (three home runs) in 4.2 innings.
Harvey returned for the sixth inning and retired the side without any trouble.
Harvey’s troubles however, occurred in the seventh inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Harvey gave up a RBI single to Charlie Culberson. He followed that up by giving up a sac fly to Teheran. Harvey’s final runs of the day came on an Ozzie Albies three-run homer.
Jerry Blevins relieved Harvey and struck out Freddie Freeman to end the inning. Blevins stayed in for the eighth and had a 1-2-3 inning.
Jeurys Familia was called upon to pitch the ninth in a non-save situation. He worked around a one-out double to end the inning.
Offense
The Mets faced Teheran (2-1, 3.65 ERA) and struggled mightily against the right-hander. Teheran no-hit the Mets for 6 2/3 innings. Asdrubal Cabrera broke up the no-hitter with a double to right field in the seventh. The Mets managed to load the bases in the inning with two hits and a walk, but failed to score.
Adrian Gonzalez had an infield single while Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto each walked once for the only offense before the ninth inning.
Brandon Nimmo led off the ninth with a walk and Juan Lagares followed with a single but the next three batters went down in order.
On Deck
The Mets will look to fix their recent struggles as they host the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series. Zack Wheeler (2-1, 4.09 ERA) will take the mound tomorrow for the fifth time this season, while German Marquez (1-3, 5.14 ERA) will make his seventh start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game can be heard on 710 WOR or seen on SNY.
