The New York Mets (16-9) were defeated on Saturday by the San Diego Padres (10-18) by a score of 12-2. The Mets pitching and offense were certainly not at the top of their game, to say the least.

Pitching:

Jason Vargas made his season debut today coming back from a non-displaced fracture of the hamate bone in his non-pitching right hand. Vargas was not greeted kindly as he was pummeled by Padres offense.

He gave up nine earned runs, nine hits, two walks, and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings.

That stat line could have been worse had Juan Lagares not robbed Christian Villanueva of a home run in the second inning.

Seth Lugo came in for relief and he struggled as well pitching 2 1/3 innings while allowing three earned runs, four hits. On the bright side, he recorded five strikeouts.

Jerry Blevins pitched the seventh inning and only allowed a walk.

Jeurys Familia came in to pitch the eighth and got through the inning unscathed.

Hitting:

The Mets offense wasn’t particularly on top of their game. The Mets only damage came from Yoenis Cespedes as he hit a two-run homer off of rookie left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi in the sixth inning.

Asdrubal Cabrera, Amed Rosario, and Jay Bruce were only the other three batters to record a hit in the game, all of which were singles.

On Deck:

The Mets will send Zack Wheeler to the mound tomorrow to face Bryan Mitchell in the final game of this three-game series against the San Diego Padres. The game airs on WPIX and starts at 4:10 p.m. The Mets will try to win their first series since April 13-15 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
