Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Mets are in serious discussions to sign first-baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
Last season was by far the worst year for him as he hit .242/.287/.355 with three home runs and 30 RBIs to compile a 69 wRC+ in 71 games.
His career numbers tell a different story though as he is a career .288/.359/.488 hitter with 128 wRC+ over the course of his 14-year career.
Gonzalez has a similar story defensively as he put up -2 defensive runs saved at first base in 2017, but has 66 for his career.
The 35-year old was involved in a trade last month with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves in which he was released right after the completion of the deal.
The five-time All-Star was in the last year of his contract and is due to make $22.3 million this season, but the Mets would only have to pay the league minimum to sign him as the rest of the money will be paid by the Atlanta Braves.
This likely does not bode well for Dominic Smith as it was believed Jay Bruce would serve as insurance in case he struggled, but it now appears they might be getting close to finding his replacement.
