Let me begin by telling all of you something you already know; rooting for and watching the New York Mets this season, is like getting getting all your wisdom teeth pulled without the nitrous oxide.
After a week highlighted more by comic relief than actual feats on the field, the Mets find themselves further removed from the division lead than at any point this season. Between Mr. Met fingering some douche bag who deserved it, a bat boy who got Terry Collins ejected, and last night’s side show of a dejected fan who stuffed himself inside 30-something Free Shirt Friday t-shirts, who the f’ck needs actual baseball, right?
This Mets team isn’t fighting to get into the playoffs, they’re desperately hoping to win the Emmy Award for best late night comedy. Only nobody is freaking laughing, except maybe for Dusty Baker, Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy.
What is it about this team that they can’t seem to get out of their own way? And at what point do we stop pinning the blame for their appalling 23-30 record on injuries?
I’m so damned sick and tired of using injuries as an excuse for all the mind-numbing misplays, gut-wrenching relief appearances, and soul-sapping managerial screw-ups. I’m sick of it all.
They Mets now 11 games back in the division, and nine games back in the wild card standings. Yes, there’s still plenty of season left for the Mets to turn this laughing stock around… Yes, it’s indeed mathematically possible. But does this team have the intestinal fortitude and character to actually pull it off?
If you ask me, the big question after watching last night’s debacle is, will there still be a season to salvage by the time Noah Syndergaard rejoins the rotation in August (hopefully)?
And if not, we’re sure going to look like a bunch of horse’s asses if the trade deadline comes and goes and we have nothing to show for the departures of Lucas Duda, Jay Bruce, Addison Reed, Curtis Granderson, Jose Reyes, Neil Walker and a half dozen other players who won’t be back next season.
It’s gut check time. Who are these Mets and what are your expectations for this team now that one-third of the season is in the books? When you look at this team do you see the world beaters everyone said they would be in 2017? Or do you see the a team that the latest Power Rankings have them at 21 out of 30 with only a 14 percent chance of making the postseason?
After going into this season bursting with optimism, I can’t believe that on June 3rd I’m deliberating over whether the Mets should sell, bring up Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith, get all the starting pitchers healthy, and come out of the gate in 2018 with guns blazing. I just don’t know.
Maybe I’m just too pissed off. Maybe I’m just sick of this two-steps forward and three-steps backward bullshit we’re dealing with season. Maybe I’m just sick of the lack of freaking accountability from from the top down on this team, and how they’re the punchline to a joke after every injury.
I don’t mean to get all gnarly on you, but I’m being very serious here… Who are these Mets?
