The Mets (16-9) were defeated by the Atlanta Braves (7-19) tonight at Citi Field by a score of 3-0.

Pitching:

Matt Harvey got the start for the Mets tonight, and turned in another average outing which has been a reoccurring theme for the right-hander this season.

Harvey went just 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out four.

The game was a standstill until the fifth inning, when 22-year-old Mallex Smith hit a home-run that hit off the black in left field, for the young outfielder’s first major league homer.

Then, in the sixth inning, Kelly Johnson reached based an immediately took advantage of Kevin Plawecki‘s arm behind the plate, stealing second. Johnson promptly scored on a double from A.J. Pierzynski,

Pierzynski was nearly thrown out by Yoenis Cespedes advancing to third, but was safe by a matter of inches. This would prove to be big, because Pierzynski subsequently scored on a wild pitch to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.

Offense:

Matt Wisler had it working for the Braves tonight, tossing eight scoreless innings of one hit ball, while striking out four and walking two.

The Mets just couldn’t catch a break, as they had several balls that were struck very hard that unfortunately reached Braves gloves.

On deck:

The Mets will look to take the rubber game tomorrow afternoon, as Steven Matz (3-1, 3.86 ERA) gets the ball, and will be opposed by Jhoulys Chacin (1-1, 3.27 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM.
