New York Mets third baseman David Wright has yet to play in a Grapefruit League game and probably won’t until next week in order to ease him back. Despite that, the Mets captain is confident that he will be ready for Opening Night.
“You’re still talking about a long ways away,” Wright said a day after manager Terry Collins said that Wright is nowhere close to playing games. “I think that this could be beneficial to me because I’m getting really good work in. … There were some things that I felt I need to work on mechanically fielding, and I wouldn’t be able to do that along with getting ready for a game.” (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)
Despite not getting and game action, Wright says he’s working on a lot of other baseball activities and trying to improve in some areas.
“I think this could be beneficial to me because I’m getting really good work in,” Wright said. “The last couple of days I’ve gotten some really good sessions in with Tim Teufel as far as my fielding goes.”
“There were some things I felt I needed to work on mechanically fielding, I wouldn’t be able to do that along with getting ready for a game,” Wright continued. “I’m looking at it on the positive side where yeah, I’m a little late to games but I’m getting some work in that I wouldn’t normally be able to get in.”
Always the positive one, Wright is. A couple of the beat writers have reported that Wright will make his Grapefruit League debut on March 18 when the Mets play the Washington Nationals at Tradition Field.
