Robert Stock was briefly a Met in 2021, making two starts and three total appearances. He spent the next few years pitching in South Korea, Mexico, etc… It took him all the way until last season to return to the big leagues, making two appearances out of the bullpen for the Boston Red Sox. At the age of 36, Stock probably wasn’t sure if he would pitch in an MLB game again. But he did just that and performed quite well against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
He started the game off by retiring eight of the first nine hitters before giving up two singles in the top of the third. Neither of those hits resulted in anything. Stock got through four scoreless innings before giving up a solo home run to Joe Mack in the fifth. He got through five innings, allowing one run on three hits, zero walks, striking out four over 70 pitches, a very respectable line in his return.
The 2026 season has been a difficult one for Stock. After pitching for Team Israel at the World Baseball Classic, he began dealing with arterial thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder. “Thinking about where I was a couple months ago where I couldn’t move my arm or my head to being in Citi Field is as much of a dream come true as could be,” Stock said.
With the amount of moves the Mets have made and will continue to make throughout the day, more and more openings on the big league roster are popping up. That means Stock may stick around for the remainder of the season. It’s a good opportunity for him, not only to showcase what he can offer to the Mets, but also to the rest of the league heading into 2027.
