yoenis cespedes

Despite a deflating loss to the floundering Miami Marlins Friday night, Yoenis Cespedes‘ performance was the silver lining to an otherwise gut-wrenching night.

In the sixth inning, after Marlins’ starter Tom Koehler had kept the Mets at bay for the entirety of the game up until that point, Cespedes stepped into the box and promptly laced a triple to center field, and was driven in by Michael Conforto on the very next play.

Then in the seventh, with Curtis Granderson on base, Cespedes launched his 29th home run of the year to dead central. I swear, the guy makes it look easy.

It made me seriously debate if I’ve ever witnessed a better pure hitter than Yoenis in my tenure of being a Mets fan. He’s just other-worldly type good.

To say that Cespedes has enjoyed his time in New York would be an understatement.

Since acquiring the stud outfielder at the trade deadline, he has slammed 11 home runs and driven in 31 runs for the Amazin’s. Over that time period, he is hitting a robust .295/.345/.605.

To be able to see this guy go out there donning a Mets uniform every single day is truly a treat and an honor. I haven’t been this excited over a player in a long time, and he has proven to be the missing piece to our lineup we so desperately needed all year.

I know most of you, including myself, have thought about what the future holds for Cespedes and the Mets. I know his contract expires after the season and the Mets only have five days after the World Series to try and work out a deal to retain him long term.

I know all of that, and as much as I want Cespedes to play in Queens for a long time, my main concern is this year.

Chances are, Cespedes won’t be wearing blue and orange in 2016, but we get to enjoy him now in 2015. He was brought over to help us bring a World Series trophy back to Queens for the first time in almost 30 years, so just enjoy him while we have him and strap in for the ride, because it’s going to be an exciting one.

Keep shining on, Yoenis.
