Major League Baseball has officially set their 2024 trade deadline date to Tuesday, July 30 at 6 p.m. ET, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Due to the new collective bargaining agreement, the Commissioner’s Office has the power to set the deadline to any date between July 28 and August 3. The league liked having the deadline on a Tuesday, as the 2023 deadline was on Tuesday, August 1, so they decided to keep it on a Tuesday again this year.

The 2023 deadline saw the Mets trading away a majority of their veteran pieces, including Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Tommy Pham, and more. Now, with a newly replenished farm system, it will be interesting to see how the Mets approach the 2024 deadline, in particular with Pete Alonso on an expiring contract. The Mets will have a large number of veterans who are impending free agents if they aren’t in contention for the second straight season.

This upcoming trade deadline may seem insignificant at the moment, but Pete Alonso’s future as a Met could very well come to a conclusion leading up to that July 30 date.
