2018 Review

Jacob Rhame was up and down all year between New York and Triple-A Las Vegas, and to his credit, he put together a very fine season pitching in the pitcher’s death valley of Cashman Field. However, he struggled in his 32.1 innings of Major League time, producing just a 5.85 ERA and allowing a ghastly 2.23 HR/9.

This was Rhame’s first extended look in the Majors, as he only pitched nine Major League innings in 2017 after he was acquired in return for Curtis Granderson, where he had a 9.00 ERA. He was able to keep his walks down, but little else went right for Rhame in terms of results.

Rhame did finish off the year strong, with a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched in September, along with a .261 opponents’ wOBA. His overall body of work was still disappointing, however, considering that he was ranked as the Mets No. 21 prospect according to MLB Pipeline in 2017.

2019 Outlook

Now that Rhame has officially graduated from his prospect status, his grace period for not performing is starting to end, and if results don’t come soon, he may not last much longer in this organization.

Still, there are signs of hope for Rhame, considering that he’s still 25, pitched well in the minors last year, and finished off the year strong in the Majors. He likely will not make the Opening Day roster in 2019, but barring a major injury, it can almost be assured that he will be given another look at some point next year.
