2017 Review:
Jerry Blevins started out 2017 as one of the best relievers in baseball. In April, he was dominant. Over his first 13 appearances he went eight scoreless innings. He ended the month with a 1.00 ERA, 14 strikeouts, and three holds in 15 appearances and nine innings.
He did extremely well in May too. By May 10, he had only given up six hits, five walks, and one earned run in 20 appearances and 12 1/3 innings. While he did blow up in his next appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 14, that was the only appearance he gave up any earned runs in during the month.
Blevins struggled in June and early July. He wasn’t as consistent and dependable in that period of time for Terry Collins. From June 1 to July 7, he gave up runs in six of his 16 appearances. Overall he had a 6.75 ERA and 1.969 WHIP in 10 2/3 innings during that time.
Blevins rebounded to only give up runs in four of his final 31 appearances. While he had some rough stretches, Blevins still did well in 2017.
Did You Know:
He set new career highs in games played (75), wins (six), holds (19), and strikeouts (69). However, he also set a career high in blown saves with seven. He finished the season with a 1.5 WAR which tied his career high he set in 2012 with the Oakland Athletics.
2018 Outlook:
The Mets picked up Blevins’ 2018 option and he will be getting $7 million for the season.
During the 2017 season, the Mets traded for minor league relievers Jacob Rhame, Jamie Callahan, Drew Smith, Stephen Nogosek, Gerson Bautista, and Ryder Ryan. Blevins will be valuable as not all the prospects are ready for big league action and the ones who are can’t be depended on with their lack of experience.
