2017 Review:
Jeurys Familia was involved in a domestic abuse fiasco which ultimately led to the Mets closer being suspended for the first 15 games of the 2017 season.
He was reinstated on April 20, but just a few weeks later on May 11, he was diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder and subsequently underwent surgery the following day which sidelined him until Aug. 25.
In September, the right-hander’s first full month back from the disabled list, he had a 3.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched.
Overall, however, it was a lost season for Familia. The time’s he did pitch, especially later in the season, were low-leverage situations.
Did You Know:
Familia earned his sixth save of the year in the second to last game of the season. He has 106 career saves, ranking fourth on the club’s all-time list. Jesse Orosco is third on the list (107). Familia allowed just one earned run in his last 7.1 innings (1.23 ERA). He also held righties to 10-for-52 this season (.192).
2018 Outlook:
The Mets will hope that Familia is able to return to vintage form in 2018 and get back to the pitcher that closed out 51 games for the team just one year ago.
New York’s bullpen figures to be a big piece to the puzzle of success going forward, so getting Familia back to form is going to be key.
The team has a strong core of relievers at the back end of the bullpen including Familia, AJ Ramos and Jerry Blevins and will likely add at least one more to solidify matters even more.
Coming off surgery, it’s always hard to know exactly where a pitcher will be, but the Mets are hoping he can return to his 40+ save form next year.
