I was taking a look at a month old post from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, who enlisted the services of one unbiased agent and one unbiased GM to put together their free agent predictions for this 2013-2014 offseason. I was curious to see where they had LaTroy Hawkins, Marlon Byrd and Josh Johnson pegged and surprising all three signed for far less than what many expected. Here is what they came up with: Hawkins […]
The Rockies agreed to terms with veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins on a one-year, $2.25 million deal, last night. The contract includes a $2.25MM option for 2015 with a $250K buyout and will be official once Hawkins passes a physical on Thursday. Hawkins will close games for Colorado who get themselves a steal. Sandy Alderson weighed in on the deal this afternoon and according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the issue was not closing games, it […]
Is it me or is time flying this offseason? I can’t believe that the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft is already upon us. Tomorrow night at 11:59 PM EST is the deadline for adding players to the 40 Man Roster. I think the Mets are in great shape heading into decision day. With four spots currently open, that’s just enough to protect Steven Matz, Jeff Walters and Jacob deGrom with room […]
Less than a month after re-signing Tim Lincecum, the San Francisco Giants wasted no time on signing Tim Hudson to a two year, $23 million dollar contract. According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the deal could include a full no-trade clause for the 37-year old Hudson. The veteran right-hander is coming back from a fractured ankle he suffered against the Mets last July. He was having a solid season at the time posting […]
This was something I actually read on a Seattle Mariners thread, but I thought it related very well with the Mets front office and many Met fans as well. The ideal acquisition for the Seattle Mariners this winter is a speedy right-handed hitting corner outfielder with a strong arm, adequate power, a keen recognition of the strike zone, a history of durability and a contract that won’t guarantee him $50 million or $60 million after […]
If you thought when the Oakland A’s signed veteran infielder Nick Punto to a one-year deal that it would open the door for them to trade shortstop Jed Lowrie, think again. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Lowrie, who was atop the Mets’ wish list of potentially available shortstops, is staying put and not going anywhere. A’s assistant GM David Forst said in an email Wednesday: “Punto’s signing has nothing to do with Jed […]
A month after saying that acquiring a veteran backup catcher would be a top priority, Sandy Alderson downplayed the entire idea and told reporters that he would be prepared to pair Anthony Recker with Travis d’Arnaud if that’s how things work out. Adam Rubin with the quotes: “First of all, we like Anthony Recker as a backup,” Alderson said. “So if we were to get a more veteran guy, it would be in part out of concern that […]
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson arrived in Orlando for the GM Meetings tonight and got things started with his usual deadpan humor. “Well, I was upstairs stacking our money. Don’t get too excited. They were all fives.” When asked how high the stack of five dollar bills go, he responded: ”Not as high as some people expect.” Responding to a direct question, Alderson said he is unlikely to sign any player to a $100 million contract […]
The Dodgers were apparently open to dealing any of Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, and Andre Ethier — who are each under contract with some serious money attached to them. However, Jon Heyman wrote “…a Mets person suggested that trio isn’t at the forefront of their internal talks, at least at the moment.” However, Nick Carfardo of the Boston Globe thinks otherwise and wrote on Sunday that the Mets are in search of a big-name player and […]
