Shoppach Denies Daily News Report That He Was Behind Red Sox Mutiny

Updated Post 9:30 PM

Catcher Kelly Shoppach met with team officials today, including manager Terry Collins, to distance himself from a report in today’s New York Daily News that said Shoppach was a key figure in Boston’s player mutiny against manager Bobby Valentine last month. More specifically, the report said it was Shoppach who sent the infamous text to Boston’s owners.

Shoppach has adamantly denied any involvement in the situation.

“I wasn’t behind any texts,” Shoppach said. “I actually didn’t even attend the meeting. It was on an off-day in New York. I stayed back in Texas with my family. I’ve already gotten a few text messages from some of my former teammates, apologizing that my name was even brought up in that.”

Original Post 11:00 AM

Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was not the author of the now-infamous text message to Boston ownership complaining about manager Bobby Valentine, although it was sent from his cell phone, major league sources told Andy Martino of the Daily News.

Those sources also said new Mets catcher Kelly Shoppach was deeply involved in writing the message that touched off the latest Sox drama, but Shoppach would not confirm that charge.

Several sources say Gonzalez had nothing to do with the message…The text message was not his idea or his opinion…Those were from the small group of players that included Shoppach.

Martino adds that on Saturday at Nationals Park, Shoppach denied any involvement in sending the text message, insisting, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

However, on Tuesday when the Yahoo! report was published, Shoppach was asked about it and said of the Red Sox organization, “Let me be very careful. I think, and maybe this is as far as I’ll go with it, too, there is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management.”

The waiver trade of Shoppach to the Mets was completed that same day.

Reportedly, Shoppach had been feuding with Valentine throughout the season. Back in May, Shoppach was griping about starting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia who was off to a great start, Valentine made Shoppach’s comments public.

When asked about all these revelations last night, Shoppach had the following to say:

“I don’t know that anybody is saying anything, and to be honest, I don’t care. I don’t play for them,” Shoppach said. “I play for the Mets. My responsibility is here. Nothing I did yesterday does anything for today, and that’s going to be my stance for the rest of my life.”

It’s probably for the best that the Red Sox got rid of him and hopefully it’s for the best for us too. But why does almost every acquisition from this front office have to come either with baggage or players coming back from injury or career declines?

  • I don’t know and I don’t care..

What we do know is whose phone it was sent from and that wasn’t Shoppachs’.

Must be a slow news day for Martino. Often wonder who these ‘ML sources’ are they all reference.

We have enough known controversy here in Flushing. Last thing we should be doing is getting involved with what’s going on in Boston, even if we now have a player from that seemingly disgruntled group. Take a page out of Shoppach’s book. He plays for the Mets now and whatever did or is going on in Boston should stay in Boston.

    • Martino wasnt the only one reporting on Shoppach an text gate Boston was 1st to report it if im not mistaken

      • Yeah, I realize that. I was just commenting on the Martino story referenced here.

Saw this Rosenthal tweet a little while ago:

Ken_Rosenthal: Why would #RedSox’s Gonzalez let teammates send a text message to ownership from HIS phone, as reported by NY Daily News? Who does this?
        ******************************************

I have no doubt some player (or players) got to management. But this whole ‘it was Gonzalez’s phone but he didn’t send it’ story doesn’t make much sense.

  • Because that’s all we can afford. Why don’t fans see that there is no $ to hand out. Virtually zero. Get used to it and not the propaganda that the front office tries and have us believe. Zero $ to improve.

    • And why can’t fans get it through thier heads that you have to spend money to make money!

If you start a new business there is no money from it to build it!

You have to invest money that you might lose if not successful but if you don’t spend that money you can never succeed!

Fans can whine all they want about the lack of spending or the fact they think the Wilpons are paupers and can’t afford to build this team up but the truth is the reason there is no money is because they seemingly have no reason to pay to go see the team.

Until such time as they go and get a player someone deems worth seeing!
How many season ticket sales will Shoppach generate?

      • ‘And why can’t fans get it through thier heads that you have to spend money to make money!’

No argument on me from this. After paying all the bills for 2012, if the Wilpons were crossing their fingers revenues from this season would put them somewhat in the black, they were really fooling themselves.

Open the checkbook a little, Fred. We need an OF.

        • Thats pretty much what I have been trying to get accross for over a year and a half now SRT.

Whatever you think about the Wilpons and thier money the bottomline is we aren’t going to see them play and the result is no revenue to pay the bills.

Wilpon for all we hate them DID kick in thier own money to pay them, Sure they took a loan or two to do it but that doesn’t matter it was still thier money (and the new owners they acquired) that paid for what we refused to pay for.

That said people seem to think that what we are generating in revenue is all that can be made in NY unless your name is the yankees….
          BULL!
You cut costs in business only when you think your making all you can make and there is no way to increase that. We have a lot of room to improve revenues here and in this market as we have proved we can support a 150M team and still make a profit!

So it shouldn’t take Wilpon money to go and get someone worth seeing and history shows time and time again the 20-25 mil you might pay for a Pujols per year adds way more than his payroll to the revenue!

for every 2.5K extra you get to come per game the end result is close to 25+ Mil in revenue!
And getting one good player can get you way more than 2.5K per game! Especially if you get him at the time people are deciding to buy season tickets or not (Nov-Dec)

We had close to a $150 Mil payroll in 2009 and didn’t lose a penny as a business.
Thats because we had players who were signed to play that year and despite the fact they got hurt and didn’t play the tickets were already sold before a single game was played or injury incurred!

You have to give the Fans hope, HOPE sells tickets, Not Wins…Wins only increase the HOPE but by the time the wins have come during a season, it’s too late to translate to season tickets this year and will only truly affect the next which can be offset if you lose some of the players that gave you hope like a Beltran or Reyes.

Whatever we think the current financial state of the Wilpons is if they just went and signed someone worth seeing they wouldn’t actually be spending thier own personal money to pay him.
The Fans would have some hope and pay his salary in the form of Season tickets and attendance.

I just wish Fans would stop expecting or insisting that we CAN’T spend money as an excuse for not doing so!

We certainly CAN spend some provided it’s not on crap unpromising reclamation projects gathered in NUMBERS and focused on a single player that actually improves the play and the hope the fans feel in regards to seeing the team in person.

If they go and get someone who excites the fanbase the way they did when they got Beltran and Martinez then the attendance and ticket sales will not only cover the Nut the team has but get them even more revenue to go and get the next guy who can pack them in.

Once we start selling out and have maxed out what revenue can be THEN and only then should we be looking to rearragnge the budget, purge expensive non-performers so we can re-invest that money into more players who can keep the place packed!

None of that stops you from drafting and developing good kids nor yusing those kids when ready to replace those expensive players when they are finally ready.

But too many people think it’s an either or proposition and history shows that concept has never worked!

There is lots of room to generate more revenue but it requires having something to sell!

Shoppach and Francisco is not going to pack them into the seats!
The Wilpons don’t need to spend money they simply need to promise some and once that promise is made the Fans will flock to the seats and allow them to keep that promise and make more!

          • ‘I just wish Fans would stop expecting or insisting that we CAN’T spend money as an excuse for not doing so!’

Not sure I agree with this statement.
I won’t pretend to know the state of Mets finances. I do get the impression that prior to the Madoff debacle, the Wilpons had no problem spending money on the team. Now? Not so much.

They keep insisting no one owns a MLB team to get rich – it’s a hobby for them. One I suspect they’re no longer willing or able to spend much of their own money on. That means the team has to start bringing in some money. With down revenues these past few years – and 2012 doesn’t look much better – just don’t think the Wilpons can or will dig into their own pockets. It’s a Catch 22.

            • Srt you missed the point….
If they got a player that excited fans they wouldn’t be digging into thier own pockets to pay him!

The fans would go to see that guy and not only pay his salary but the salary of the next guy who can do it!

The team lost money because no one went to see them not because the Wilpons were broke!
The Wilpons were NOT broke they paid close to 120 Mil of thier own money out to cover the bills!

Broke people can’t float a business that has 120 Mil in debt!
              Wilpon DID!

If we went and got a good player they wouldn’t pay a penny of his salary we would with the increase in ticket sales!

              • I keep saying the Wilpons are not broke. The Mets are broke.
And apparently the Wilpons are unable or unwilling to continue to fund this team from their own pockets with the losing seasons and down revenues the past few years.

It’s really as simple as that, IMO.

                • Yes the Mets are broke…
                  Why are they Broke?
                  Lack of attendance!

How do you fix lack of Attendance?
                  Get someone worth seeing!

When they do the Wilpons won”t need to front a penny of his salary!

So Sandy should look to make money and not Blame Wilpon’s financial situation for his lack of getting someone who jumps attendance up!

Which one of these upcoming free agents are going to boost ticket sales?

We had a bunch of stars, Wright, Reyes, Betran, Bay, Santana, K-Rod and attendance still declined.

Texas made a big splash in 2001 with money they didn’t have and went bankrupt. They invested in A-Rod, got a short term spike in sales but they needed a whole lot more than A-Rod. They didnt win and attendance went down.

They have 80.5 million tied up in 6 players next year. Bay, Santana, Wright, Dickey, Niese and Francisco. According to MLBTR.com they’re not increasing payroll next year so that means they have around 13 million for the other 19 roster spots. So just like I’ve been saying. They’re not bringing in any big ticket items until Bay and Santana’s dead weight is off the books. They take up 50 million of next years payroll and are not tradeable nor will the team eat their money and bring in salary on top of that. It is what it is.

            http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/mets-unlikely-to-boost-payroll.html

            • HAHAHAHAHAHA Yeah they went bankrupt in 2010 over what they spent 9 year before that!

What they spent got them 4K more per game in attendance for the measly cost of 18 Mil more a year!

They cut Salary from it’s high of 105 Mil in 2002 to 67Mil in 2009 and THATS why they had to file for bankruptcy because they only drew 24K per game as opposed to the 34K per game they drew in 2001 after spending that money you claim firced them into bankruptcy 9 years later!

You do realize they were paying him 16.5 million a year while he was playing for the Yankees right? They were paying him up until he opted out after the 2007 season and they still owed him 24.9 million when the team was sold in 2010. They also finished in last place 3 straight years, saw attendace drop and couldn’t afford to improve the team because of his contract.

You still didn’t answer the question. Which one of those free agents available after the season is going to boost ticket sales?

                • And you do relize that if they hadn’t traded him and had him to continue to draw fans to thier stadium they wouldn’t have lost all that drawing power that paid his salary!

And maybe they wouldn’t have gone bankrupt at all for paying someone else’s player!

                  • They traded him because they couldn’t afford him and if they kept him and paid the entire salary instead of 65% of it they wouldn’t have been able to add any players to get them out of last place that they were in for 3 years with him. Ticket sales didn’t go up wth him, hence they couldn’t afford him.

I notice you’re still running from the question of who on that list of FA’s will increase ticket sales.

                    • Answer to your dumb question….ALL OF THEM!
                      ANY OF THEM!

More than Resigning Scott Hairston or the next crappy Bullpen arm we get to replace the other scrubs we bought this year will!

As to why they traded A-Rod…
He wasn’t happy and WANTED to get out of there!
                      http://www.thebatt.com/2.8484/rodriguez-traded-to-yankees-1.1206928

Nothing about couldn’t pay him just the same crap you guys cling to called FLEXABILITY which gave them no flexability at all as they cut payroll even more after he left!

Nice try to make A-Rod the cause of thier Bankruptcy though…

Typical of an idiot to take events 9 years apart and try to put them together as causes of the present…
Kind of like you and your buddies we suck because of something that happened 25 years ago crap we all suffered through the last two years!

                    • Answer to your dumb question….ALL OF THEM!
                      ANY OF THEM.

Just as I thought. You haven’t got a clue. All of them! Any of them! Yeah that’s a nice plan Mr. Wannabe GM. Lol. Yeah there’s a bunch of players on that list that people are dying to wait on line outside Citifield’s ticket office in 20 degree weather in January, for tickets to go on sale. I’m sure you’d be the first dope out there. But with you that’s to be expected. You can’t answer the question so you respond with all of them/ any of them.

As to why they traded A-Rod…
He wasn’t happy and WANTED to get out of there!

Why wasn’t he happy? Could it be the fact that they had no money to upgrade te team around him because his contract? Could it be 3 last place finishes?

“Nothing about couldn’t pay him just the same crap you guys cling to called FLEXABILITY which gave them no flexability at all as they cut payroll even more after he left”!

Read the link I gave. They still owed him money after the team was sold. They couldn’t pay him hence the trade.

“Nice try to make A-Rod the cause of thier Bankruptcy though”…

His contract was the beginning of their downfall. Again try reading the link moron.

“Typical of an idiot to take events 9 years apart and try to put them together as causes of the present”

Typical fkn moron who can’t seem to grasp the fact that they were still paying him even after he was traded and couldn’t pay him the last 25 million 9 years after they signed him.

“Kind of like you and your buddies we suck because of something that happened 25 years ago crap we all suffered through the last two years!”

More typical bullshit from a fkn moron who again was proven wrong and has to do what he does best. Make shit up. . Unless you got proof of something I said about 25 years ago being the reason why we suck now. More like we suck because now of what happened for 4 years prior to the last 2.

Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Bay, Santana and K-Rod didn’t boost ticket sales and neither will any of the free agents available. Winning sells tickets. I’ll bet your little sidekick will by what you’re selling.

                    • Yeah thats funny….

                      “You Thought!”
                      hahahahahahahahaa

                    • Nice comeback! Still can’t think of a player that will make people run out to buy tickets can you?

                    • I can think of ;lots of them!

You mentiond quite a few already!

You think there is NO ONE?

Is that what you are hoping someone around here buys into?

Sorry not everyone is as dumb as you are!

                • Yeah you can think of lots of them. Well stop running from the question and name some. What’s wrong, don’t have the guts to name one? Nothing on that list worth while? Yeah I’m the dumb one who keeps handing you your ass everytime you try to BS people into thinking you ave a clue.

                  • hahaha OK sometimes you just have to give the retarded kid throwing a tantrum a bone I guess…

Josh Hamilton, Carlos Lee, Robinson Canoe, Michael Bourne, Curtis Granderson, Lance Berkman, Nick Swisher, Zach Grienke, Broxton

And pray tell did we get Hernandez and Piazza in Free Agency you dunderhead?

There now go and run back to your liar liar pants on fire script!

                    • Oh and to be hone what you SHOULD have asked is who we could have gotten….
Names such as Pujols, Beltran, a whole slew of folks who could have increased attendance and revenue!

But what would you know about revenue that doesn’t require a sign and a tin cup?

                    • Are you signing all of those guys, cause just one or two won’t do much except maybe get us to 500, dipshit.

You think the Yankees won’t pick up Grandy and Cano’s options? That’s a given. Did you say Carlos Lee? Lmao… Carlos Lee? He’s shot and worse than Duda and Murphy defensively. Berkman may have a career ending knee injury and that would mean you’ve given up on Ike. So much for that fan shot in June.

Nick Swisher and Broxton are nice fits but they’re not selling any tickets. You want to bring Hamilton to NY with his drug and alcohol past? Are you kidding? You may as well have him play Tony Montana in the remake of “Scarface” this way he could snort a kilo of Coke on the set. And another basketcase Zack Grienke who wants no part of a big market city, let alone NY with his social anxiety disorder. No wonder it took you so long to answer, you don’t have a clue.

Yeah I figured you would give a 32 year old Pujols who’s probably closer to 37 with a fake birth certificate a 10 year 250 million dollar contract. We already had Beltran and attendance tanked with him. Yeah that will increase ticket sales. You know as much about revenue as you do about the game itself. Squat!

No wonder you’re an Omar slurper. you’re just as clueless as he is. Spend for the sake of spending whether or not the player makes sense. Just spend. Maybe you can trade our glut of middle infielders and get back a Piazza or Hernandez.

Stick to what you do best. Start flame wars. Your GM skills suck.

  • Valentine has always had issue with older Vet players because of his Management style.

It’s one of the reasons I was against naming valentine the manager when Terry was hired.

Those Vets have mostly gone now so Valentine probably would good for the current team but Terry is doing a good job and I can’t say Valentine would be better than him by any stretch of the imagination.

    Just get Terry some players!

  • There seems to be so much cloak and dagger going on in Boston that it’s hard to discern who said what when and why. I really don’t care what happened with Shoppach in Boston my concern is only what he does here with the Mets now and “IF” they sign him during the off season.

    • So it doesn’t concern you that what was once a tight knit, good feel, always fight lockeroom has since been deflated by the front office, shows no signs of life anymore and the only move since then was for a guy who is old, has no real improving impact on 2013 and is very likely part of the problem of the bad lockeroom in Boston?

It doesn’t concern you that this FO has so far cut the legs out from under a team that was performing by it’s inaction and vascilating, and then goes and gets someone involved in a toxic team chemistry, insubordination and mutiny either as a central role or even just as a minor conspirator?

Not a problem at all for you?

Is there no impact on baseball other than what you see on your TV screen and in the Boxscore?

  • talk about much ado about nothing. Who cares?

that is more silly drama than I get from my teenage daughter!

  • AdamRubinESPN: Kelly Shoppach said he had nothing to do with text to Red Sox ownership in postgame interview with Mets reporters.

    • What do you expect him to say? OJ said he didnt have anything to do with those murders. Alderson said he would build through the draft.Wilpon said he isnt broke. People lie all the time when confronted. You cant believe everything you hear or read. Where there’s smoke there’s fire.

      • Until there is any evidence to the contrary, there is no reason to believe he had anything to do with it.

“I wasn’t behind any texts,” Shoppach said. “I actually didn’t even attend the meeting [with ownership]. It was on an off-day in New York. I stayed back in Texas with my family. I’ve already gotten a few text messages from some of my former teammates apologizing that my name was even brought up in that.

        • Why are you defending shoppach again?? Because he is a cancer and you know it…

          • Since you seem to believe he’s a cancer, maybe you can give me some proof of that.

          • Well, i am gonna give you the same proof that was given when guys like delgado and luis castillo were considered cancer to the clubhouse as well… NONE!

  • The Red Sox have become a bigger circus then the Mets ever were.

  • Let’s see, there was a player on that bunch of whiny malcontents that used someone else’s name to go behind his manager’s back and complain. Then the Red Sox give away ONE player for “future considerations”.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that my hapless Mets got the bad apple. Yup if this guy was the mistake, the Mets were sure to make it.

  • A NON STORY!!

  • I live in Boston and I can not tell you all how HAPPY it makes me to see the Red Sox descend into mediocrity! It warms my heart to see these jerks flounder about! Johnny Pesky passed away a few days ago and NO Doubt Red Sox brass will use his passing….
The JImmy Fund telethon is this week also. Christ! the Red Sox manipulate the hell out of sick kids! Disgusting! There are advertizements that read, “..$100 for every run scored during this 3 game series up to $10,000″ WTF! Why not just donate the $10 Grand? Well becasue then the Red Sox annoucers could not have the opportunity to tell the World how wonderful the Boston Red Sox are to donate $100 every time a run scores! Just a whole lotta manipulation going on!
DISGUSTING! That big ginat David Ortiz with his stupid hald beard posing with little Johhny in the wheel chair……..!!!! Arghh! I hate these f@cks! Booby V. brings class to the Red Sox!! How funny is that?!

    • Sorry to hear that you live in Boston.

  • So basically, we got a cancer into our clubhouse eh??? A guy who gather other players and snitch it to the media? i thought most fans were against having players who were considered cancers??? Guess sandy doesn’t care.

  • According to the New York Daily News, former Bosox catcher Kelly Shoppach, who had issues with manager Bobby Valentine about lack of playing time, was behind the idea to manage up and thought sending his – and some other players’ – concerns via text would be better received by management from a respected All-Star and the team’s highest paid player, and not a backup catcher who had been on the record about a lack of playing time”
    At the time Shoppach said:
“Let me be very careful. I think, and maybe this is as far as I’ll go with it, too, there is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management.”

With new allegations that it was Shoppach, not Gonzalez, who was behind the text, Shoppach denied the claim Saturday:
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. … I have no influence on what they’re doing with upper management. I am a backup catcher doing my job. It is my responsibility to do my job. That’s it: a guy on a one-year contract who is just happy to have a job around a bunch of talented guys like they have there.”

Now, it sounds as if Shoppach has landed on happier ground and he’s trying to put it all behind him:
“I don’t know that anybody is saying anything, and to be honest, I don’t care. I don’t play for them. I play for the Mets. My responsibility is here. Nothing I did yesterday does anything for today, and that’s going to be my stance for the rest of my life. ‘What am I going to do today? Yesterday’s gone. It ain’t gonna do (expletive) for me today.’ That’s my philosophy on life.”

The guy never denied NOT sending the text though… Cancer…

    • Let’s admit why you care so much about a story on a backup catcher from a team almost as disgruntle as Hanley’s Marlins were a few months ago.

      • This.

        Allegations, ‘sources’, rumors…….

        • I really Have a hard time caring about a text message where a player was or was not behind. Who cares if he liked Bobby V or any other drama there?

          • Here’s what I have a hard time with…..

A ‘core’ group of Met fans have heartache with the Shoppach trade b/c of unsubstantiated rumors involving a text message….but have no problem bringing back KRod for the tune of 17.5MIL after he was arrested at Citi field and going further, violated the restraining order his girlfriend had.

            • Right now what you just said it’s the same f’ing sh** you complain about, about instigation and try to bait others etc, now i can handle it, but don’t go crying or have your leader bi*** and moan about how in here some people are disrespectful etc…
I am making a point about how there’s a double standard about cancerous players, have nothign to do with the CORE or with the Desert. you have your opinion and i have mind. if you don’t like my opinion just say fine and move on, at no point i mention the desert in disagreeing with you, if you want respect give it understood? Cuz i have no problem engaging with you in disrespectfulness…

              • Sigh…..

Just repeating what I’ve been reading here day after day.
Old argument of keeping Beltran and Krod last year. That’s fact so don’t know how you consider that instigating.
If you weren’t one of those who wanted KRod retained, fine. I didn’t say you did, just said ‘core group of Met fans.

I think sometimes, some of you confuse instigating with nothing more than an opposite of opinions. If those with opposing opinions can’t debate them without resorting to anger with personal attacks, that’s not my problem. I don’t engage in that.

                • You knew exactly what you was getting to.. also, what good did it do for us not keep krod? does it matter to you or any of us? it’s not as if the money we saved we used it elsewhere.
all we did was slash payroll at a record pace baseball had NEVER seen before, so not sure what you’re argument is regarding krod. beltran could’ve been here, yet nope. was traded for wheeler, we moved on from that, only problem is, beltran might be the NL mvp and wheeler might become a john maine type pitcher for all we know… stop slurping everything your lord does, the guy is a cancer imo, move on…

                  • ‘You knew exactly what you was getting to’

Only because I knew who I was replying to. You jump on opposing opinions quicker than some here do.

Unless you can prove this guy is a cancer, you move on.
Just saying ‘he is, case closed’. LOL, you are too funny.

            • Krod – Omar guy
              Shoppach – Sandy guy.

i made it easy for you. if you want to look a little ‘deeper” that is up to you. ;->

              • Or maybe it’s because…..

                K-Rod – All star

                Shoppach – Backup

A lot of people can put up with a headache that’s one of your better players, but not many people are going to put up with a headache that’s just a backup.

                • Damn Vinny you beat me to that one!
                  LOL
I was just about to reply hat when I saw your post!

                • He was smart enough to trick gonzales into going along with his cancerous plan to create a mutiny and how it’ll be better heard if it was sent from his phone etc… Cancer..

                  • You have some imagination.

                  • Well for one (and this touches on what Vinny said) They were not likely able to take any punitive action against thier highest paid player!

What were they going to do trade him and have to eat some of that money because of some bad press?

                    Was Shoppach involved? Probably!
So were a lot of other guys who would have been far easier to trade than Gonzales!

                    • Still all speculation though..wouldn’t you say?

That’s like trying to decide if Piazza took steroids just based on speculative pieces printed over the years.

                    • Well there is a lot more evidence to that scenario than there is for saying Wilpon forced Sandy to not spend by limiting his Budget but that doesn’t stop anyone from claiming thats a foregone conclusion….

If Shoppach wasn’t involved he was a conspirator cause if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have said what he said when he got here about a disconnect!

                      http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/index.php/2012/08/16/kelly-shoppach-disconnect-in-communication-between-players-and-management/

Circumstantial? Maybe but obviously they tried to trade him for awhile even before the deadline and didn’t like the return and then after the texting incident he got sent for a PTBNL…

WHy not someone else more involved than him?

                • Wow! Comparing a guy who beat the shit out of his girlfriends father in the players lounge in front of teammates kids to a guy who may or may not have sent a text message from another guys phone.

    • ‘The guy never denied NOT sending the text though’

Already posted this one, but either you didn’t read it or don’t want to believe it:

“I wasn’t behind any texts,” Shoppach said. “I actually didn’t even attend the meeting [with ownership]. It was on an off-day in New York. I stayed back in Texas with my family. I’ve already gotten a few text messages from some of my former teammates apologizing that my name was even brought up in that.

    • “The guy never denied NOT sending the text though”

He said quite plainly he didn’t send the text.

      • Right…. And reports said he used gonzales’ phone because he was an All Star and management would pay more attention…
the guy is a Cancer and it was obvious, as soon as sh** hit the fan he was busted and shipped out.. And of course, we picked him up and noone says sh** about it… the double standard with mets fans is amazing

        • It’s only obvious to you.

          Again:

‘I’ve already gotten a few text messages from some of my former teammates apologizing that my name was even brought up in that.’

“Everybody that was involved in that whole situation knows that I had nothing to do with it. Like I said, I’m a Met now. I’m really excited to be here around a fun group of guys. And I wish the Red Sox nothing but well. I had a great time while I was there.”

          • My thing is, so what if they did? Maybe it needed to be sent and Gonzalez would not Have allowed it if he didn’t agree. We are talking about something we know nothing about, only the coaches and players know how bad that locker room is.

            • Which makes the situation 20x worse since most people in the know are saying it is FO waging a PR war against the players.

            • LOL…not like we don’t have enough controversy with the Mets. What the heck do we care what’s going on in that Red Sox clubhouse? I know I don’t. I just get a chuckle out of it b/c for once, it’s not the NY Mets.

        • That doesn’t make any sense though. Why would Gonzalez consent to that?

Have you not been paying attention to whats been happening up there? Ownership and some FO are waging a PR war against current and former players.

Think about the crap they did to Francona.

          • Rosenthal’s tweet:

RedSox’s Gonzalez let teammates send a text message to ownership from HIS phone, as reported by NY Daily News? Who does this?
            *****************************************************

Sounds like he’s not buying it either.

          • He’s a cancer. case closed…

            • Let’s admit why you care so much about a text message sent from a group of disgruntled players.

            • LOL….in your world only.

  • This is the stupidest controversy since Rubin/Minaya/Bernazard

  • This is the same thing they did when Francona was fired. They get rid of a guy and throw him under the bus with zero truth to it on the way out. SOP for the Red Sox organization.

    • And people think our ownership is the worst in baseball eh?

Look (and this isn’t directed at you X just the general masses)…

If they wanted to avoid controversy in Boston they would have picked someone OTHER than Valentine as thier Manager!

Something I tried to impress on everyone when they were touting him to take over the Mets from manuel!

There are two types of people with Valentine…
Those that love him and those that HATE him…There is no inbetween!

He notoriously goes behind the players, owners, GMs back to the press to make his case and inspires evveryone else to do the same!

So it really doesn’t matter to me if Shoppach was involved or not as there would probably be no tweet at all if BobbyV was not the Manager!

      • No argument on me with Valentine coming here. I didn’t want him back.
That and I think we all knew they weren’t spending that much money on a manger.

        • Valentine hasalways been a genius when he wins and evil incarnate when he loses!

If Public relations and Harmony is important to you Valentine is not your man!

He’s a great baseball guy but suck at being a people guy!

Give him a team of young unexperienced kids and he will do great things.
Give him Veterans, coaches and GMs who think they know a thing or two and there will always be a public bloodbath!

    • Xtreem,

You’re just jealous because Mets players didn’t do the same thing to Jeff Torborg and Jerry Manuel. Admit it… :-)

      • Actually they did but Jeffy didn’t know how to operate the texting feature on his phone to read them…

Fred probably still uses and old flip phone sans text message support.

      • Ha. You caught me. Actually, Manuel was completely backwards. Threw Willie under the bus on the way in. How weird was that? And Torborg? Well, he was a non-issue for me. That’s like blaming Brad Mills for Houston.

  • This thread has reached a new height of udicrousness . So now a guy that is now on the Mets was accused (not proven) by a “source” of taking part in a text sent, not even from his own phone to management of another team means the guy is now a cancer.

WOW – this is the personification of the hate for SA just for the sake of it.

    • A report from a NY paper, no less. Not even a Boston one.

      • Here is your Boston source…

        http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/index.php/2012/08/16/kelly-shoppach-disconnect-in-communication-between-players-and-management/

Nah he was not involved in any way in that entire controversy!
        LOL

        • I missed the part where it said he was in any way, shape or form involved in that text message scandal. I also missed where that article even mentioned TextGate at all. It seems to also omit anything at all that would lead anyone to believe he had a personal issue with Valentine. I’m not even sure what that article does say, actually.

          • Does it matter if he wrote the text or not he was part of the group that was unhappy that caused the text to be sent!

You know Charles Manson wasn’t at the LoBianca residence either yet there he sits in jail!

            Ever hear the word CONSPIRACY?

            Shoppach was part of it!
You know Conspiracy you and the other Smug Brothers have one to convince the world a Moneyballer is what the NY Mets need!

            • I don’t even know how you can read the report from Boston that said he had nothing to do with and how ex-teammates have apologized that he was dragged in and still go on this solo crusade. And I don’t even know what a Moneyballer is. Something else about baseball you made up?

              • Yeah there arlots of things you don’t know….

He said there was a disconnect between players and management before the texting thing came out!

Thats proff he was involved in thier issues because if he wasn’t he wouldn’thave taken his shot at them wyhen he got here!

Close your eyes to that if you must but thats the truth and all your spin to protect Sandy from those facts is not making you look any smarter!

                • And Valentine also said they had a closed door meeting about playing time. Which of course means they hate each other. Same leap you made. Also you lied about the quote hoping no one would notice because you were proven wrong.

“““Let me be very careful,” Shoppach told reporters. “I think — and maybe this is as far as I’ll go with it, too — there is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management.””

I guess that means there’s a conspiracy against the field manager. In Metsie’s world. All alone. By himself.

                  • Yeah I’m alone because you and your pother Smug Brothers have asked your friend JoeD to ban anyone else who has ever disagreed with you! LOL

Pray tell who do the PLAYERS communicate to upper management through?

                    The Bat boy?
if there is a disconnect who pray tell broke the chain of communication?
Why if Valentine was not a problem did they have to go around him AND the GM to text the owners directly?

                    HMMM?

                    • So now you insult Joe D’s intelligence by claiming he bans people just because I ask him to? E-mail Joe D and ask him how many e-mail complaints he’s gotten from me. I dare you. Then post that answer so everyone can see how many people were banned because of me.

                    • LOL you should go into politics with Spin skills lie that!

I wasn’t insulting Joe’s Intelligence…All I was suggesting is that the bannings do appear to be one sided in the Smug Brothers favor by placing you guys in charge of cleaning up the chat of all people who disagreed with you!

You guys really did start with the insults and got away with it and it wasn’t until it got fired back at you that it became an issue for any of you!

Kind of like appointing an Iranian to be peace negotiator in Syria if you ask me!

All joe did was make a bad choice as Peace Envoy!

I don’t know what Joe has heard regarding the bannings but it is funny how Fonzie remains here isn’t it?
Funny how it hasn’t stopped MNJ from insulting JoeyD nor you from telling posters they should be embarrased for understanding the Authors point of an article better than you did!

But no you all are just Halo Wearing angels and everyone else is the cause of it all and should be banned!

My only advice to Joe here is if he keeps on doing that those page views and impressions will plummet because the 4 or 5 of you won’t generate the page views the debate you HATE brought here!

He should have ACTUALLY hired an outside moderation firm or put someone less toxic like Mitch in charge of the cleanup!

No he put the boas there and nothing up my sleeve presto lots of users are gone and funny only your side remains!

                      Hmmmm…No Conspiracy, no connection!

ALl Joe is guilty of is showing loyalty to long time users.
You guys took advantage of that loyaty and thought you could get away with anything because he would always take your side of it…

And in this one case you will appear to have been right….For Once!

                    • I don’t know what Joe has heard regarding the bannings but it is funny how Fonzie remains here isn’t it?

Fonzie is still here because he has done nothing to warrant a banning. You on the other hand go out of your way to start flame wars. It was much more peaceful and a lot less drama here the few times you took a few days away from the site.

This place would be a helluva lot better without you and Alex.

                    • Yep mr Liar is all you got to say to anyone

We never had these fights before you got here!
                      NEVER!

                    • The fights started long before I got here. I used to read them all the time and you were centered around the majority of them. And you just proved my point about you being a BS artist. There are no fights whenever you take a hiatus. Joe D would’ve never personally contacted me to write for this site if he felt I was the one starting the flame wars. All he has to do is go look at every thread and he’ll see all the threads with a lot of comments are dominated by you all because you can’t ever admit your wrong. You don’t have the guts to admit when you’ve been caught in one of your many lies. Ban you and this site would become a pleasure.

                • And btw MNJ never insulted Joey. I understand why you back Joey up though. He’s the only one that believes your constant BS.

                  • Sure he did he even apologized or it on one occassion….

But you go right on swearing to lies it seems to be all you got these days!

Hows your boy Sandy doing by the way?

            • “You know Charles Manson wasn’t at the LoBianca residence either yet there he sits in jail!:”

              …?…

OK, can we end this discussion now?

It has officially gone off the deep end.

              • Says the Smug Brother who blames Wilpon for everything Sandy has and hasn’t done!

                • YOU MADE A CHARLES MANSON COMPARISON!

How bat shit crazy do you have to be to sit there, type what you did, read it yourself, have it pointed to you and still say “ya, totally reasonable”?

Even if Shoppach mugged Gonzalez for his phone, sent the message and stood up in front of the media and declared so, your statement is still rubber room, wrap around jack nuts.

                  • Less batshit crazy than trying to claim a guy who was clearly disgruntled and unhappy at Boston wasn’t involved or in with the group of disgruntled texters after he clearly took a shot at the management when he got here!

                    • Are you posting from a bell tower? Or a shed in Montana?

                    • Well I’m certainly not where you are in Belvue Psych ward!

Or is that your Parents (jessups) basement I get them confused sometimes!

                    • Where is clean shoutbox when you need him…Oh yeah he woud ban me instead because he is just so non-partisan! LOL

      • Only a NY Paper???? Seriously bro, stop it.. YOu’re making a fool of yourself!! Boston Newspaper broke the story!

        • LoL. That’s not even a little bit true.

    • Less evidence was used as proof that Wilpon was broke, Wilpon stopped Sandy from spending, Wilpon was a thief in on the Ponzi Scheme, and Wilpon is a meddling manipulative Owner who runs roughshod on all the GMs he has ever hired….

      MUCH less proof….

Which is the personification of the hate for an Owner who has brought you the best most competitive 25 year stretch in this team’s history!

No one seems to have a problem with Hate based supposition, lack of proof and accusations when it’s not Moneyballin Sandy thats involved now do they?

    • I believe these quotes by Shoppach were giving several times in responses above?

That was my viewpoint anyway. Quotes from Shoppach directly denying any involvement and messages from his Boston ex-teammates apologizing that his name was even brought up in connection with ‘Text Gate’.

      • All the talk about the text is unimportant….

If he IS a cancer it’s because when he is unhappy with management they grumble and complain and in this case Shoppach was disgruntled at Boston, Other wise he wouldn’t have answered the question regarding Boston when it was posed to him, He wouldhave simply said “Hey I’m a Met now what goes on in Boston is Boston’s Business”

He didn’t do that he took a shot at them!

Which makes him guilty of being as disgruntled by whoever wrote, sent or facilitated the text that was sent!

  • The same guy complaining about a cancerous player acquired to be a backup wanted to trade Wright for Hanley Ramirez. LMFAO… Talk about slurping.

    • Don’t you just love irony?

  • For a post whose first few comments were kind of who cares. No big deal. This is not news. Apparently it’s invoked quite a passionate display of debate. 100 comments, not bad…

    • LOL it was no big deal until Sandy was brought into it!

      Then the sparks flew!
      Typical!

      • For that R**** guy who took a shot at me, that is the same reason why i went ballistic, because the issue with hanley was that he was a cancer to the team.. Yet, about the backup catcher no word about him being a canceer was thrown out…

        • LOL Alex I was actually indicting myself there…I believe I was the first one to bring Sandy into it.

          “Metsie August 19, 2012 at 1:37 pm
“So it doesn’t concern you that what was once a tight knit, good feel, always fight lockeroom has since been deflated by the front office, shows no signs of life anymore and the only move since then was for a guy who is old, has no real improving impact on 2013 and is very likely part of the problem of the bad lockeroom in Boston?

It doesn’t concern you that this FO has so far cut the legs out from under a team that was performing by it’s inaction and vascilating, and then goes and gets someone involved in a toxic team chemistry, insubordination and mutiny either as a central role or even just as a minor conspirator?

Not a problem at all for you?

Is there no impact on baseball other than what you see on your TV screen and in the Boxscore?

Truth is I don’t think it’s important what happened and the only reason the Sandy side is downplaying it is because it is one more thing Sandy has done that isn’t very good, Might potentially be bad, Is against what he said about trading players for guys who do not fit into the “IMPROVING 2013″ category and cost them a player they all heralded as the sign of all those good moves we could expect from Sandy over the next 5 years and oddly enough it might actually have been his second or third best acquisition to date!

But they gave up on HIM and not the other failures…

Shoppach is inconsequential, He is just another turd pie we are being fed in hopes we like the taste of that turd over some other brand!
Thats really all this move is!

        • Shoppach was ACCUSED, by an unnamed source to be involved, in text message, that was sent from someone else’s phone, meaning not his!

Hanely has dogged it in the field, fought openly with managers, and teammates on numerous occasions.

Not even in the same discussion.

  • Yeah sure Mr. Hanley slurper! Whatever you say.

  • It’s clear to me that the Kelly Shoppach saga was clearly, and I mean CLEARLY an attempt to take yet another shot at Sandy Alderson.

It comes out that Shoppach wasn’t even with the team when the text was sent. And if he was, who cares? It came from AGone’s phone right? I highly doubt he stole another players phone.

Yet – the same people who want to act like getting Kelly Shoppach was such a big deal, continue the fight. He’s a backup catcher.

Comparing him to a guy like Hanley Ramirez is beyond the limitations of sanity. Everybody knows what Hanley is. Everybody. Fredi Gonzalez, Jack McKeon and even Ozzie Guillen have come out to say so. His teammates said so, we’ve seen it on the field. It’s not even comparable in any way to the thought of “maybe” Shoppach sent a text.

The Red Sox clubhouse was a mess in 2011. Shoppach wasn’t even a Red Sox player in 2011. There’s a huge difference between being unhappy with a manager because he leaves Jon Lester out to hang himself, and having to be benched by two managers for lack of hustle or respect to the team.

If you told me today that Adrian Gonzalez said “I sent the text.” I’d still take Adrian Gonzalez on my team in a heart beat. He wasn’t writing owners because he wants to drink beer or show up late to meetings – he was writing because he was sticking up for his teammates.

That is a WORLD of a difference between anything Hanley ever did.

If Shoppach or AGone sent the text, I say good for them for sticking up for Lester because the same manager cost them Kevin Youkilis who has improved his OPS over .100 since leaving.

If you want to have a problem with players sending messages to owners (like that never ever happens right?) fine. But trying to act like somehow this is yet another reason to bash the Mets is so far fetched it’s comical to see people try it.

    • You know what I heard? I heard that Kelly Shoppach sent everybody except Ortiz, Salty, Padilla and Buchholz a text and told them not to get on the private bus that would take them to Pesky’s funeral services but then he did text them later that night telling them they should go to Josh Beckett’s bowling alley fundraiser.

Man this guy Shoppach I tell ya!
