Marlins President Calls Miami Taxpayers Stupid, Says Reyes Was Only Motivated By Greed

Miami Marlins president David Samson is a creep. Sorry if that comes off as too judgmental, but it happens to be the truth.

In a speech he gave to local Miami business leaders today, Samson gloated about his success in duping Miami for the taxpayer money that resulted in the sweetheart deal to build his team’s new stadium. He then mocked the citizens of Miami and suggested they were stupid for footing the bill and enriching him and the team.

“I don’t have to hold back now that the stadium is built — not that I ever have,” Samson said according to Miami Today.

“We’re not the smartest people in Miami. If you’re in this room, you’re instantly in the top 1 percent. We don’t care if nobody comes. We’ll play in front of nobody, and we’ll have all the money.”

Wow, what a despicable thing to say.

He went on to say that baseball players are terrible role models and should never be looked at that way, and then the subject switched to Jose Reyes.

Forget what Reyes said about liking the city, and the team, and the direction the team was going in. According to Samson all that mattered was getting as much of that green stuff as he could.

“He said “I really want to play in Miami as long as you pay me $1 more than anyone else… I really want to make the most money I can,’” Samson said of the negotiations.

I’d take Fred Wilpon over this creep any day.

  • How did he become such a successful businessman with that kind of attitude. Unless he keeps his trap shut, he’ll be out of baseball before the Wilpons will be.

    • He’s Loria’s stepson. Step daddy probably bought his way through life.

      • BIOLOGICAL SON OR STEPSON, THIS SECOND GENERATION JUST DOESN’T GET IT WHETHER THE NAME IS DAVID SAMSON OR JEFF ‘BFTSPLK’ WILPON

FEW EVER RESPECT THAT WHICH THJEY NEVER WORKED FOR. HE WOULDN’T LAST 2 DAYS IN A NY PRESSER FOLLOWED BY MILLIONS INSTEAD HE GETS TO PERFORM IN FRONT OF MIAMI’S 2 MICROPHONES TO THE BEMUSEMENT OF APPROX 25 PEOPLE ONLY A THIRD OF WHICH ARE ENGLISH LITERATE.

HELL, COMPARED TO FIDEL & RAUL CASTRO LORIA & SAMSON ARE A COMEDY ROUTINE. AS REYES IS THEIR LATEST SIDFESHOW ACT TO BE JETTISONED IF NO WS TITLE AFTER 2 SEASONS

CERTAINLY ANY PLAYER WITH AN IQ IN EXCESS OF 75 WOULD DEMAND THE HIGHEST PER DIEM FOR PUTTING UP WITH SUCH RIDICULE I’M SURE JOSE KNOWS IT’S REALLY ONLY A PART TIME BRIDGE GIG TO GET HIM THE MOST WALKING AROUND CASH UNTIL, OPTIMISTICALLY HE CAN BE RERURNED TO NY BY THE WILPION SUCCESSORS JUST AS DOUBLEDAY SOUGHT TO RETURN THE “TERRIFIC”
ONE! SO EXPECT NO NYC BASHING FROM JOSE’; MANY REGRETS @ LEAVING

I’M CURIOUS TO KNOW HOW MANY MULTIMILLION DOLLAR POTENTIAL DISCUSSIONS FRED HAS ACCEPTED AS IF THEY WERE WRITTEN CONTRACT OFFERS IN HIS REAL ESTATE BUSINESS? PERHAPS THAT’S TO BE THE TRUE CRUX OF HIS DEFENSE IN THE PICARD TRIAL? HE DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS ALL FOR KEEPSIES? lol

  • My Goodness, This man threw everyone under the bus!!!!!!! Then mayor of san antonio mr goodman as well, LMAO, Wow.. I have a 24 hours over under for a public apology from this clown…

    • LOL. I wouldn’t be holding your breath, Alex.
Sounds like he’s got that arrogance part down pat.

I hope it all falls flat on their face. Like a ton of bricks.

      • All the goodwill and excitement of a new beginning thrown right down the toilet by what has to be one of the biggest morons in any industry anywhere in the world.

Big backlash coming on this one with big implications for the future of the team not to mention an expanded investigation of the Stadium deal.

People are going to be pissed and it’s not going to be a pleasant place to play for anyone.

        What a complete moron.

        • I’d almost have a tendency not to believe this could be true but the article clearly defines those quotes as belonging to Samson.

        • If you want some grassy knoll action, maybe it was all part of the master plan to fleece the taxpayers, and cash in on the windfall ASAP (as in, sell some seats, generate some buzz, and look for a rich sucker!)

    • Apology or not, the real feelings and motivations of ownership are now evident for all to see. These Miami guys would fit in real well with Irving (PickPocket) Picard. Fred and Jeff come off as good guys compared to that crew. Let’s go Mets!!!!

    • Alex,

You’re being way too kind! I say public appology by midnight. Rumors of him being reassigned by mid-day tomorrow. He checks in to some spa type rehab by 8:00PM tomorrow.

      • Sloatsburg, LMAO!!! I was thinking the same!!! What a moron, someone on his PR crew is actually telling him how wrong this is

  • Way to go Simpson.

‘How To Win Friends and Influence People’.
    (SMH)

Not really surprised about the Reyes comment though. They all follow the money.

  • I like to slap that fool right up side the head. Should Miami taxpayers be enraged about this remark? Hell Yeah!

  • What is it with big headed Miami sports figures and running their mouths?

    • That is the exact same question I was wondering, Donal. I remember a lot of people in Miami weren’t too pleased with the Marlins tearing down their beloved “Orange Bowl” in favor for the Marlins, but now? This is gonna come back to bite them in the ass more than this ****bag knows.

  • Not true at all about Jose.

All he wanted was to get taken out to dinner and a show, and to get a nice box of chocolates. Nothing to do with money.

    • LOL.
Whether he said it or not, I can’t image he’s happy reading that about himself right about now.
      Welcome to FA, Jose.

      • might be a bit of a paraphrase, but quite likely that was the message given.

      • All Jose wanted was $100 Million in bon bons. His feelings were hurt that the Mets didn’t court him better. He wanted to be courted like Miami did for him. With today’s announcement by the Marlins ownership, the real knuckle draggers of Miami emerge. Jose is feeling a bit queasy right now, no doubt.

        • When Jose was here he saw everyone get a big deal.

Most guys got hurt, played poorly or both. Once the spending started in earnest he got hurt once before this past season, an injury which could have possibly been a misdiagnosis as it was originally his calf, then became a torn hamstring tendon. Maybe it was just BS to keep people at the ticket window who knows. I don’t consider his thyroid condition to be an injury but it did keep him out and set him back a little but when he played, he played great, and at a key position.

Seeing Kaz, Cameron, Pedro, Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Wagner, Castillo, Alou, Perez, Schowenweiss, K-Rod and Bay get taken care of and nothing left for him has to sting. I mean how couldn’t it? the guy played hard and he played hurt. Never caused a single bit of bad publicity and gave a hell of a lot more of himself other than perhaps Wright.

The Mets had every chance before he became a free agent to address his situation and some of that could just be bad timing or financial downturns but Reyes gave a lot to this team and there certainly should have been something left for him.

He was originally signed for 15K, made the minimum for 3 years and then got a an average guarantee of less than 5 M a year for four more years before his option. Total average for all years before his option (non guaranteed) is less than 3 M a year all the while doing more than many guys making double all the way up to 5+ times more.

Then to have the owner say what he did in his walk year on top of it. I don’t blame him for being miffed and I don’t blame him one bit for taking the best offer he could get after all if his career had ended like Duanner Sanchez’s did or Sean Ratliff’s might have he’d never have had the chance to get a great payday and the Wilpon’s should have made sure he was taken care of after the Madoff thing hit but instead they brought in Bay who gets 2/3rds of what Jose got.

          • Gave more than Wright? The guy who played with a bad back. Reyes is the guy that doesn’t always run out grounders and the same guy who took himself out of the game.

Tell me when Wright has done any of that?

            • I’m not here to knock either of them but Jose played hurt, when he could and Wright doesn’t run every GB out. Far from it.

The facts are that a SS who can fully defend his position and hit is a very valuable piece to have and far more difficult to find then a 3B who’s average defensively and streaky with big platoon splits.

It would have been better for the present as well as the future to sign Reyes and let Wright go FA after 2013 if there had to be a choice between the two and while Wright gave up more in potential FA years than Reyes did, he still was guaranteed 20 M more when they signed their deals and that’s not a small sum.

              • It wasn’t Wright that missed most of 2009. Lets not forget 2010. And Reyes had what 2 trips on the dl in 2011. So much for playing hurt. And isn’t funny in a walk year Reyes has the best season of his career.

Not very classy. Where was that Reyes past years? Where was that Reyes in September of 07 and 08? I love how boneheaded fans forget all the times Reyes didint hustle or made the most idiotic plays on the base paths.

But let’s all throw Wright under the bus. The guy who plays hard and plays hurt. Unlike the soft Reyes. If Wright hits like he’s done in the past you’ll be another tool who jumps on the bandwagon.

This is why so many people despise Met fans. A good portion are no better than the Philly fans or that other NY team

                • Dave he said Reyes gave a lot more of himself more than any other Met other than Wright. He didn’t say he gave more of himself than Wright did. I’m not shedding any tears that Reyes is gone, as good as he is he’s still a bonehead and injury prone. Wright on the other hand plays hard, plays hurt but he doesn’t always run out grounders either. He’s been in decline for 3 years now and disappears in big spots. I wouldn’t shed a tear if he’s moved as well.

                  • Thanks Fonz,

Actually I wrote that Reyes gave more of himself than anyone except perhaps Wright. The two heads and tails gave more of themselves than anyone we imported here during their careers.

Reyes game lends itself to injury much more than Wright’s and it’s physically impossible to play with the sort of injuries he suffered. Neither guy ever got a day off.

I’m not participating in a bash Reyes or Wright session because I like them both. I accept that both of them have limitations in their game and that just the way it is with 99% of the guys who make it to the Majors.

Just thought Reyes deserved better from the Mets, that’s all and that the owner should have made him a priority back in 2010, two years before he was a free agent like everyone else does for a guy they want to keep.

                  • Fonzie13 — Both David Wright and Jose Reyes gave a lot to the Mets. No quibbling about that. But Jose made a dumb, egotistical move by demanding a lot of money before he and his bonehead agent, Peter Greenberg, did due diligence on Jose’s worth in the current market. It was amateurish. I’ll always remember Jose as an enthusiastic, talented, spirited guy, but his business senses are lacking. Actually his dopey agent deserves to be fired. He was supposed to guide Jose and he didn’t. Finally, Jose and Peter Greenberg tried to do a power play through the press. That was dumb because Jose’s market value wasn’t established. David Wright on the other hand has been low key and keeping out of any trouble with Fred and Jeff. That’s smart, especially until he knows what the market will offer.

  • brings up a good point though (something that is hurting the Mets right now).

for all the jokes about “tax payer field” and how NYers are somehow subsidizing the park, the Mets (sterling, whatever) paid a hell of a lot more than other teams did for their new stadium. That includes the Yankees (who got a lot more taxpayer funds) and far and away more than the Phils (PA covered that nut).

And much of the largess from government for the Mets was in the form of loans/bond guarantees (those pesky $45 million IOUs) that the Mets have to pay back, and infrastructure improvements (like the new subway line) that don’t actually have anything to do with the stadium as it impacts the Mets bottom line.

If Fred had managed to get a sweetheart deal instead of paying himself, the team would have much less of a cash flow issue.

    • That’s why I’ll never under some fans and the ‘Freddie Coupons’ rhetoric.
Wilpons aren’t cheap when it comes to the Mets. They’re allocation of that money though leaves something to be desired.

      • oops. *their

  • Do you think there will be a sit down with Bud?

    • IDK. Aren’t they already being investigated as a result of ‘practices’ used to build that stadium?

Maybe all Selig will have to do is sit back and watch the drama unfold.

      • I believe it was something to do with the bond issues, kickbacks, under te table money, etc.

IOW, how every other deal involving politicians and their cronies goes down!

but man, could you imagine if Jeffy said something like this?

  • This is outrageous, he should be investigated. Fans in Miami should be up in arms!

    • that would be like what, 12-14 arms total, right?

    • it is actually the tax payers that should be taking up pitchforks though. the team itself should be OK!

  • This is a Mets fan site. What the hell do I care what happens in Miami, the Marlins and Jose Reyes. The only connection is that we have to go to that miserable city and play the team with the ugliest uniforms in sports history (except maybe for those old Astro uniforms).

  • I hope he gets his wish and no one shows up for their games. They will have to sell. My only fear is Reyes ending up a Yankee when that happens as he takes over for Jeter.

  • Sadly, it’s all probably 100% true.

  • Do you think that wuss Bud Selig will fine this idiot owner or will he wimp out. What MLB is a Roger Goodell. He has the Saints crapping their pants over the bounty scandal.

  • You’re full of it , I live in Miami and am a Marlins fan ,
Even though Sampson is a Weasel, he’s not that stupid to speak out like that

    • oh, so you’re their fan.

If you don’t think he actually said it, take it up with the newspaper that broke the story, Miami Today. He also says a lot worse.

  • Miami M. have always been a joke. They were a joke when they won two world series b/c nobody gives a flying f— for that team, and no one ever will.

I swear, the fact that Reyes joined them really made me wonder: they have no fan base. Why wouls an accomplished professional want to play for them other than the obvious fact that it’s good to play with great teammates and in a competitive environment. In MLB you have to be playing for fans, though–that’s what makes great teams great (in a sense).

I swear I hope this team suffers immeasurably this year!

    • That team is not at peace. With Ozzie Guillen butting heads with Henley Ramirez who doesn’t want to play third, it won’t take long before they’ll be blood in the dugout. They’ll be a disaster.

    • ‘Why would an accomplished professional want to play for them…’

This is their livelihood, it’s their job. 99% of them follow the money, if they have a choice. Most of us would do the same in our careers.

And if we can believe that quote about Reyes, he not only wanted to play in Miami, he wanted top dollar to do it. I keep going back to the fact that he signed with Miami when to the best of our knowledge, it was the only concrete offer he received. Ruben is quoted as saying: ‘..the Mets never made him a formal offer. But, according to sources, they made it clear they were willing to guarantee five years — with the deal ultimately rising in value to six years, $100 million if Reyes could stay healthy and a vesting option kicked in.

I’m sure many teams checked in. I’m sure they were told by his agents what the parameters were to seriously be in the running. Apparently none of them were going to offer at least 100 MIL guaranteed but Miami, including the Mets. He got the 2 things he wanted (team and money) so he took it.

      • As our parents taught us “be careful what you wish for.”

  • My first reaction to his comments were like Lou’s, that this could all become self-destructive for the Marlins on all fronts including those empty seats in a new ballpark.

Never thought I would hear myself say this but yes, he sounds stupider than Fred and Jeff. When Fred made those comments to the New Yorker he was at least a bit drunk. With those underdog tee shirts, at least we know it came from one with a little child’s mentality.

This could only help the Mets for with two wild card teams, they could creep up past the other creep’s team.

  • forgot to add that maybe he’s the first totally HONEST owner we’ve ever seen in baseball for what he said was essentially right. A community should never foot the bill for a sports franchise to get it’s new ball park so owners can have luxury suites to sell and yes, players (including Jose) sign for the money, not wanting so much to wear the uniform. With Jose, however, it would have been nice for the Mets to have made some sort of decent offer to see how much genuine Jose’s love of the city and the orange and blue was.

  • Nobody is worse at P.R. than rhe Wilpons, but this guy is a close second. What i really despise the Wilpons is for theur utter incompetence of letting Reyes leave and get nothing in return and now the same dance is going to go down for Wright. If we had owners with a clue, Reyes and Wright both woukd have been extended for 4-5 years and all these idiotic whiniing posts about J.R. and D,W, wpild not exist. But alas, we are stuck with Fred, Jeffie and Uncle Saul.Yeeesh!!!!

    • The GM let him leave not the owners. It’s getting ridiculous now how many people are blaming the Wilpons for baseball-based decisions. Forget it already!

I don’t like them either but they are not going anywhere and are not making baseball decisions. And don’t skip over the GM because you may have an affinity for him either. The GM let Reyes walk – not the owners

      • Hi Bayonne,

I won’t deny I have reservations about whether or not Sandy would have attempted to re-sign Jose had he had the pocketbook. But as we’ve seen, he has not used the freed up money for anyone else which is circumstantial enough to indicate his hands are tied. I would hate to think that he was actually satisfied enough with what he had added.

We all know by now that Sandy is a no-nonsense operator which is the type of behavior any professional sports team or business should adhere to, top to bottom, however, one being the no-nonsense type doesn’t mean having to be so unemotionally detached from people an as Sandy, at least to me, has come across in his public persona . It seemed when it came to talking about Jose’s future his attitude was ambivalent and his words hollow and insincere.

That’s just a personal opinion based on nothing more than my own perception of things – I can be 100 percent wrong and really have no idea since I do not know the man personally or have worked for him. But if part of that observation is right, it doesn’t make getting along with the seemingly happy go lucky public persona of Jose and feelings can be hurt (probably not enough, of course, that money couldn’t heal).

        • it is just business after all, right? All the touchy feely in the world is still just going to be blowing smoke.

anyway, baseball decisions do have to be made in the context of budget. And right now, no one knows what the GM would have done if the owner handed him 160,000,000 to spend instead of what he did get. A lot easier to splurge when you have no worries about getting caught short later.

would he have said 5/90 max, even with a ton available to spend? maybe. Maybe not.

  • Well funny how the Miami Today folks were the only newspaper there?
No Sun Sentinal or Palm Beach Post?
    Not even the Miami Herald?

Miami Today is the only one there and they are the only source of the quotes?

    I smell Swordfish!

    • i agree,

I gotta see more about this. I haven’t heard any of this reported on TV – has it been mentioned on MLBNetwork? It wasn’t mentioned on any news that I watched and you would think this would be a major story.

Those comments just seem to outrageous to be real, there has to be more to this story

      • Heard it on one of SNY’s shows tonight.

        • Well, SNY would do anything to divert attention away from the subject of a Reyes-less Mets.

        • can u be more specific than “one of the shows”? i mean c’mon

Was it The Wheelhouse? Was it LoudMouths? Daily News Live? Sportsnite?

Which specific show did you hear it on?

        • Unless your seeing the actual speech all the reporting is coming from this Miami Today source!

Lots of reports about what Miami Today said he said but none of them have any source other than Miami Today!

    • Metsie — You may be right. As of now, the story only has a single source.

I find it strange that the Marlins haven’t issued a denial. It takes only five minutes to deny.

In any case, Miami Marlins president David Samson showed his incompetence.

      • There have been denials that the quotes printed by MT were accurate!
The story will be around for a few days at least until someone else who was there comments one way or the other.

I just find it odd that a paper who is only 10-12 years old would report this and no other press would be invited!

Sounds like someone trying to make a splash and generate sales to me!

  • I really hate what I read.
But how much can be true, coming from an author who’s a Mets fan?
A guy who sell himself for a couple beers and only attend about 15 Mets game?
And bleed blue and orange? What a jerk.

    • Are you really going to register a bunch of accounts to try and convince us there is a legion of Marlins fans?

    • It’s okay. You just can’t handle the truth. The truth hurts sometimes. Now run along, dipshit.

  • All reports I read on the web also only refer to that Miami Today story, however, we need to be reminded that there is something much more serious in which the President of the is being investigated for which can make one believe the reporting was accurate.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-marlinsfinancials082410

    • if it really was a speech at some local business group meeting, is it that surprising it wasn’t covered by every paper in the area? Lots of that type of meeting that never get covered by anyone you gotta figure.

      • In Miami? Yes!

This is a newly started (11Year old) pub that focuses on Business and news on the downtown Miami area…

Think of it similar to the Village Voice back in the day! Only not even a 100th as old as that paper!

Either they got their quotes second had and munged them to what they wanted to them to say
or they Snuck into a private function and didn’t hear clearly
        Or
It’s a smear campaign by a paper with an agenda and is complete bull!

If the press was invited you can bet your bottom dollar someone from the Herald would have been there!
There really isn’t that much to cover in Florida other than the Death Notices!

        • What?

So, you say it is a paper dedicated specifically to covering business events in Miami. That actually would explain why it i just them and not the other major publications. The others probably saw a bunch of business men glad handing over breakfast as not really newsworthy.

For a paper dedicated to local business, however, it is something they should be covering.

          • this wasn’t a business event it was a charity event!

            • Somebody should have told David Samson. He was all business — nasty business I might add. Regardless of the function, especially a charitable function, Samson showed himself to be a numbskull.

We’re his words about Jose Reyes charitable? Was he serious? Whatever his intent, I conclude he’s a jerk. Just a jerk with money. Insulting players is never smart. This went beyond insensitivity.

  • We also must remember that Miami Today wouldn’t print such a story if it didn’t have a semblance of truth to it – more than anything else, a paper would not want to have it’s reputation tarnished.

What is being overlooked is the possibility that the story, though factual, could also be guilty of omission, perhaps for sensationalism. He could have an irreverent sense of humor and doesn’t have enough sense to know when and when not to use it – that humor targeted toward the SEC investigation and the outrageous contract he has been openly criticized about (like Alderson with that ill-advised sending chocolates comment). Was the audience laughing? Did they gasp in disbelief? Did he couple his jokes with more serious statements about both subjects.

We might find out more as both sides become more open about the story and the events surrounding it.

    • Oh sure they would!

      • Metsi,

I’m talking about not fabricating the statements but indeed taking them out of context and twisting them around to make a juicy story.

But if Miami Today is sued for libel, both the journalist and publisher have little to fear for I’ll suggest to them that they hire you to take their case. And, if they are already represented by legal counsel, I’ll simply call up the Miami Marlins to let them know that you’re available as well.

Either way, I want ten percent of your fee as your agent! :)

And don’t worry about not having taken the bar exam – no drinking is allowed in court anyway.

        Joe

        • LOL

Well They would just write an apology on page 52 for what they said on page one and fire the Reporter if this turns out to be a bogus thing.

Very hard for someone (especially the press) to get sued for Libel!

          • Metsi,

If there is anyone who can sue the press for libel, it’s you. Don’t forget my 10 percent and underdog tee-shirt. :)

Glad you know I’m only kidding and that we can both get a laugh out of it at our own expense.

Did find that quite interesting about the Las Vegas stadium situation and understand that it’s just like the Vegas shows which, in itself, are not real money makers but does the jobs of drawing in the patrons. I can see the same principles applying on a bigger scale with that stadium and not in terms of a sports franchise as much as concerts which due to the large capacity would draw even more visitors into Vegas and be actual money makers by packing them into the likes of Springsteen, Pearl Jam, the Stones and Joey D. doing karaoke. :)

  • Just wanted to link this story on the Marlins’ official site:
    http://miami.marlins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120307&content_id=27099124&notebook_id=27104278&vkey=notebook_mia&c_id=mia

Samson says that the comments about “we’ll have all the money” was about Vegas, not Miami. The article does not address Reyes or calling the taxpayers stupid. The Vegas comment makes more sense…but he’s still an idiot.

    • I was involved in some of those stadium talks in Vegas…

And the Casino’s did make just such an offer!

We were going to manage the broadcasting side of the facility!
Vegas is desperate to get some professional sports there!
They have the spot for the stadium already picked out and ready to build and they even have all the off ramps already there to handle the traffic!

It’s right across the Street from the M Hotel!
      St Rose!

  • Samson: “We were talking about charity, and we are the top one percent, fortunate people,” Samson said. “We are the fortunate one percent, and we have to give back. I was talking about my run. It’s a complete misquote.”

So less than 24 hours, he Retract??? yeah, ok, Charity…

  • Having lived in Miami for 3 years I can say from my personal observations, this is pretty much par for the course down there.
