Phillies Acquire Ty Wigginton from Rockies for PTBNL
The Phillies have acquired Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later or cash, according to the Rockies’ official Twitter account. In Wigginton, the Phillies get a decent right-handed bat for the bench who can help fill in for the sidelined Ryan Howard at first base and occasionally spell Placido Polanco at third base. After batting .248 with 22 homers while recording a career high 581 at-bats with the Orioles in 2010, Wigginton batted .242 with 15 home runs and [...]

Exclusive Interview With Original 1962 Met, Eddie Kranepool
With all the fanfare surrounding the cool announcements the Mets made about the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the 1962 Mets this past week, I thought I’d share my interview with an original Met, first baseman Eddie Kranepool. Eddie of course was an original Met who began his career at the age of 17 in 1962 and played for the Amazins’ until the 1979 season when he retired after 18 seasons with the team at age 34.

Mets Should Try To Acquire Saunders, Non-Tender Pelfrey
This morning, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that the Diamondbacks could non-tender LHP Joe Saunders who is projected to earn $5 million or more in arbitration. Saunders made 33 starts last season and went 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA in 212 innings pitched. Meanwhile it appears the Mets will tender RHP Mike Pelfrey who is also expected to earn about $5 million or more in arbitration. Pelfrey made 34 starts last season and went 7-13 with a [...]

2011 Player Review: Daniel Murphy, IF
We began our review of the 2011 Mets by examining their free agents and players the team will consider tending contracts to. We started evaluating the rest of the roster, beginning with infielder Ruben Tejada and continue today with utility player Daniel Murphy. Saturday: Lucas Duda. Sunday: Justin Turner. DANIEL MURPHY, IF THE SKINNY: Murphy is a gritty, aggressive player with a high on-base percentage, but without a position and a propensity for being injured. Murphy, [...]

(Updated) Changes In New CBA: HGH Testing, Qualifying Offers, Elias Rankings Ditched
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, baseball’s new collective bargaining agreement is chock full of big changes. Major League Baseball will begin testing for human growth hormone (HGH) beginning in February as part of the new collective bargaining agreement. MLB is the first of the four major sports to now employ blood testing of its players. MLB already conducts random testing for HGH in the minor leagues, a program it began last year. Commissioner Bud Selig [...]

Could Mike Pelfrey Be A Reliever?
General manager Sandy Alderson earmarked getting a closer and improving the bullpen as his top priorities. Given that, why not consider erratic starter Mike Pelfrey in the closer role? A switch in roles proved to be career boosts for Dave Righetti and Dennis Eckersley, and it could be worth exploring for Pelfrey, who has not developed into the consistent starter the Mets hoped. The main thing that has derailed Pelfrey as a starter – losing [...]

Sandy Makes The Right Call On Pagan
Welcome Metsmerized readers. My name is Drew and I’ve been a lifelong Mets fan since 1972, a season which began with tragedy after the death of beloved manager Gil Hodges. On the field, we got off to a great start that season with Yogi leading the way and the addition of Willie Mays, but eventually the injuries became too much to overcome (Staub’s injury killed us) and Jim Fregosi, who we traded Nolan Ryan for [...]
