Rubin: Tim Byrdak On Mets Radar
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Tim Byrdak is “on the radar” of the Mets and could end up competing with Taylor Tankersley for a left-handed relief role in spring training, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday. Earlier today at an even at Citi Field, Terry Collins said he thought Alderson would add a left handed reliever to compete with Tankersley. Byrdak, 37, went 2-2 with a 3.49 ERA in 64 relief appearances [...]

Luis Castillo Will Not Be Cut To Make Room For Chris Young
Updated 9:10 PM Terry Collins confirmed today that the Mets have no intentions of cutting Luis Castillo or Oliver Perez and that both will get a chance to win spots on the roster no different than any other players in camp. Collins also added that Castillo could still very well win the everyday second base job in spring training. Original Post 1/18 10:00 PM According to MetsBlog.com’s Matthew Cerrone, there is a possibility that Luis [...]

My 2011 Projections For Mets Starters
Now that the dust has settled, and the Mets rotation has taken shape, I decided to come up with some pre-season projections for the Mets rotation in 2011. I also included early projections from the esteemed Bill James which you can always get at Fan Graphs, as well as projections from CBS Sportsline which is a combined effort from their staff. Here you go: My Final Thoughts Bill James seems to believe Mike Pelfrey will regress [...]

Terry Collins Recap From WFAN – Castillo, Reyes, Pagan, Fundamentals
Terry Collins was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN after he finished at the Cit Field Kids event at Citi Field. Here is a rundown of some things he said on WFAN as well as the event. Fundamentals Collins is big on fundamentals and he will have the players doing full workouts on an everyday basis to hammer that point home. He learned a lot about the importance of fundamentals in Japan where they [...]

Collins Names Mike Pelfrey Opening Day Starter
Updated 12:45 PM I’m here at Citi Field where Terry Collins officially tabbed Pelfrey as his Opening Day starter. The Mets open the season against the Marlins who have given Pelfrey problems over his career. I’ll have much more on this and other player news later today. Original Post 11:30 AM Freshly armed with a $4 million contract to avoid arbitration, Mike Pelfrey said this morning he welcomes the ace role created by the absence [...]

Weighing In On Recent Mets Flurries
For four weeks nothing but radio silence, then out of nowhere, two straight weeks of pandemonium and when the dust settled we find ourselves a couple of catchers, a couple of outfielders, a middle infielder, three relievers and two starting pitchers richer. Whew… I’m gonna need a few days just to figure out what the heck just happened. First things first, I love the additions of both Chris Capuano and Chris Young. Are they world-beaters? Absolutely not, [...]

Gil Meche’s Retirement: Why It Matters
This has basically nothing to do with the Mets. But it has a helluva lot to do with baseball. So if you are only interested in reading about the Mets, my advice is that you step away here. Gil Meche, once a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals, announced his retirement on Tuesday. There’s one interesting detail about this that really made me feel that he deserved an article – Meche [...]

Why Chris Young Benefits the Mets
As our own Hojo’s Mojo reported earlier this afternoon, Chris Young and the Mets have agreed to a deal, thus ending weeks of speculation of where and when he will sign. It has taken the Mets and Chris Young forever, it seems like, to sign a deal. But in the end, the signing will benefit the Mets. Even with all the injuries, Chris Young has proved that, when healthy, he can be a great starter. Padres Manager Bud [...]

Mike Pelfrey Settles With Mets To Avoid Arbitration
As I supposed in my original post, the Mets have indeed settled with Mike Pelfrey and thus avoiding arbitration. ESPN New York is reporting that arbitration-eligible Mike Pelfrey has settled with the Mets. An organization source said the deal will pay Pelfrey $3.925 million during the upcoming season. He can earn $50,000 extra in performance bonuses. Pelfrey, who turned 27 last Friday, made $3.3 million in 2009 as part of his original deal after signing as [...]

From Left Field: Young’s In, Who’s Out?
Finally, the Mets have signed Chris Young to a one-year deal. Rumors of the Mets’ interest had been circulating for much of the offseason, but the deal is done. So with the addition of Young, that begs the question: What should we expect the pitching rotation to look like? In my last post, I gave my predictions on how the roster may be shaped, including the pitching rotation. It seems as though, at least for [...]

What I Want To See From Collins On Managing The Bullpen
November 23, 2010 is the day that Terry Collins was officially announced the new manager of the New York Mets. I’ve been on record saying that I don’t agree with Sandy Alderson’s hiring of Collins. I’m not going into why again. It’s done. Collins will be the manager for 2011 and most likely 2012. I don’t like it, but I’ll still be watching games on SNY and going to some games at Citi Field. I’m hoping [...]
