Mets Looking To Add Dave Bush?

The Mets are reportedly in contact with free agent pitcher Dave Bush according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN via Twitter. Crasnick also cites a relationship between Bush and J.P. Ricciardi who originally drafted Bush in 2002 as GM of the Blue Jays. Bush is coming off of a very poor season in which he posted an 8-13 record, 4.54 ERA, and a 1.51 WHIP in 31 starts and 174 innings pitched. His 2009 season was even more [...]

Violence In America Touches A Baseball Family

I’m writing off-topic again, but not far off. Our country has been shocked this week by violence at an outdoor meet and greet by a Congresswoman from Arizona. Eighteen injured, six killed, and the Congresswoman has a serious brain injury the outcome of which is still in doubt. And how did this happen? A lone gunman shot them with a Glock. Arizona has friendly gun laws due to the lapse of national laws several years [...]

No Lewis, No Problem

The Reds yesterday signed Fred Lewis to a one-year deal worth $900,000. This is a great signing for the Reds, but it will force the Mets to turn their attention elsewhere. The NL Central defending champion Reds will sport an outfield comprised of the young stud Jay Bruce in right, exciting Drew Stubbs in center, and fiery Jonny Gomes in left. Stubbs and Gomes both bat right handed, so Lewis should find a decent number [...]

Top Remaining Free Agents

There is still plenty of offseason left and yesterday in an interview with Adam Rubin, Sandy Alderson said he still intends to focus on acquiring another starter, a reliever, and a 4th or 5th outfielder. Although, most of these following names may be a little to rich for the Mets taste, here is a list of the top ten remaining free agents as compiled by MLB Trade Rumors: 1. Rafael Soriano - The Yankees might be in, [...]

What If The Mets Can Compete In 2011? Part 2

Everyone knows I don’t have much confidence in the 2011 Mets and I’m already looking forward to the 2012 season.  I honestly believe this is just a lost season, where .500 would be acceptable, but “what if” the Mets can compete in 2011? Marvel Comics does a series of comics where they explore the road not traveled by their characters. Last week I looked at the starting pitchers and asked what if they perform? This [...]

Reds Sign Free Agent Outfielder Fred Lewis

According to MLB.com, the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a one year deal with free agent outfielder Fred Lewis that is worth $900K dollars. Lewis batted .262 last season with a .332 on-base, and in 110 games, he had 8 home runs, 31 doubles, scored 70 runs and stole 17 bases batting mostly leadoff. Our own Jim Mancari recently posted a piece on why he thought Lewis would be a good match with the Mets. He writes, Lewis [...]

Whatever The Mets May Be In 2011, They’re Still Our Team

There have been countless lost seasons in this franchise’s history, many of them gone before pitchers and catchers report in February. This is looking like another one of those years. The Mets only did minor tweaking this winter and are no better now than they were when the season ended. They are putting their stock in the season in the hopes of Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran staying healthy, the continued development of Mike Pelfrey [...]

Rubin Asks All The Right Questions In Interview With Alderson

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York had an exclusive conversation with Sandy Alderson over which a number of important topics were discussed. Here are just a few highlights of his full transcript which I would consider a must-read for Mets fans as it does clear the air of some of the smoke surrounding the Mets offseason. You’ve wanted to maintain flexibility for spending in future offseasons. Would that preclude a multi-year deal for any of [...]

Dylan Owen Follows Up No-Hitter With Six Shutout Innings

Mets prospect RHP Dylan Owen is on a major roll as he continues to dominate in the Puerto Rican Winter League. After pitching seven hitless innings in a combined no-hitter in his last start for Criollos de Caguas, Owen came right back with another strong performance on Friday. Owen did not give up a hit in the first two innings of his next start essentially giving him nine consecutive no-hit innings over his last two starts. He [...]

A Team Of Potential

As we approach the 2011 season, it seems as though several teams in the NL East have significantly improved this offseason. The Phillies brought back Cliff Lee to set up one of the best pitching staffs, at least on paper, in recent history. The Braves added Dan Uggla to solidify the middle of their order. The Nationals signed Jayson Werth, Adam LaRoche and Rick Ankiel in an attempt to improve their offense. Even the Marlins [...]
