Strawberry: Nobody Fears These Mets, They Laugh At Them

Bobby Ojeda isn’t the only 1986 Met ripping the Mets for their recent lifeless play. Yesterday, Kevin Kernan of the NY Post caught up with Darryl Strawberry who, among other things, said the Mets have no swagger.  “I think that is what they are really missing, the attitude, the swagger about being in New York, and representing New York. Other teams don’t fear them. There’s no fear. They’ve got to get to that point where other [...]

John Maine Out For Season After Shoulder Surgery

Andy Martino of the Daily News is reporting that John Maine underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean out scar tissue from his right shoulder, and will miss the remainder of this season. John Maine had arthroscopic surgery yesterday to clean scar tissue in his right shoulder. Out for season. Maine was last seen pitching in a game against the Nationals on May 20. In that game, he was removed by Jerry Manuel after making just five pitches. Despite [...]

Gil Hodges: A Mets Legend, But Not A Dodger Great

On Friday night, I sat down to watch the Mets game against the Dodgers and something unusual caught my eye when Jamey Carroll stepped into the batters box. Something about the red number on his white Dodger jersey didn’t look quite right for me. Jamey Carroll was wearing #14. Instantly, my thoughts turned to former Mets manager and Dodger great Gil Hodges, whose #14 has been retired by the Mets. Then I wondered, “wait a [...]

The Day Jason Bay Finally Became A New York Met?

From Hojo’s lips to God’s ears? Well, not exactly (there was no “couple of HRs”), but Jason Bay did hit the ball hard on three occasions with the best being reserved for his last AB of the night—a rocket gapper smacked into right center that cleared the base paths and put the game away for good for the Metsies. Innings earlier Bay finally endeared himself to Mets fans by catching a deep fly just feet [...]

Reacting To The Thrashing: What’s Wrong With Pelf?

By the end of May fans everywhere were ready to call Mike Pelfrey the ‘ace’ of this New York Mets staff and rightfully so.  He was 7-1 (11 starts) with a 2.54 ERA and over that span fans were witness to ‘An Ace in the Making’. Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com, received slack from Mike Francesa (which he explains HERE) for stating that he was “proud of Pelfrey”. At Metszilla we agreed with Matt and dubbed Pelf  [...]

Santana, Bay Fuel Mets 6-1 Win Over Dodgers

Great pitching, timely hitting, and great defense, all added up to a much needed 6-1 win over the Dodgers last night. It snapped a streak of 13 straight games in which the Mets only scored four runs or fewer. Game Notes Johan Santana (8-5) was brilliant again. Last night he pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Over his last five starts, he has been lights out [...]

Royals Interested In Jeff Francoeur

Updated 7/23 2:15 PM According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports in a post to Twitter, the Kansas City Royals like Jeff Francoeur. As I posted yesterday (see below), the Mets would like to trade Francoeur, and Royals GM Dayton Moore worked in the Braves front office when Francoeur began his major league career. The Royals do have some interesting players the Mets might find useful and they could be compatible trade partners. Francoeur is eligible for arbitration next season, [...]

Rethinking the Lineup and the Question of Chemistry

I’ve never been a reader of the Wall Street Journal and I certainly wouldn’t buy it now that it is a total corporatist, right-wing propaganda tool owned by Rupert Murdoch (although truth be told the New York Post sports section is still a guilty pleasure). But lately Rupe has been throwing free copies to my door step to get me to subscribe and as a media junkie, I figured I’d check out their sports and [...]

What Gives Me Joy? Mets Winning Baseball!

“A man becomes preeminent, he’s expected to have enthusiasms. Enthusiasms, enthusiasms… What are mine? What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy? Baseball! A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part of a team. Teamwork… Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and [...]

Expect Great Things From Jason Bay Tonight

First, let me thank fellow MMO blogger Russell Zanca for the tip… In this article by Kevin Kernan of the NY Post, Mets hitting coach Howard Johnson predicts a great night for leftfielder Jason Bay, who will return to tonight’s lineup after being benched for one game due to poor production. Bay was benched last night. He worked with hitting coach Howard Johnson before the game and both feel they came up with an answer [...]

Mets DFA Fernando Nieve, Call-up Manny Acosta

Immediately after the conclusion of last night’s game, SNY announced that the Mets have designated Fernando Nieve for assignment. After Oliver Perez (6.70), Nieve (6.00) had the highest ERA among all Mets relievers, allowing 28 earned runs in 42 innings pitched while making 40 appearances for the Mets. In five appearances in July, Nieve posted an unsightly 7.56 ERA in 8.1 IP. The Mets had claimed Nieve off waivers from the Astros last year. Replacing Nieve, [...]
