The Mets are “deathly concerned” about their 2011 ticket sales according to one official writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
“They are deathly concerned about where their ticket sales base will go for 2011,” said an AL official who talks regularly to the Mets. “They already took a huge hit from last year to this year. If the place is vacant in September because they are not in it, that is a problem because that is when you send out season ticket renewals and they will lose a lot more of their base. They can’t have the place dark in September and that is why I think they will trade to try and stay in this.”
It really bothers me that the Mets are motivated more by how much they can get financially, unlike our neighbors in the Bronx who are motivated by winning.
The Mets always seem to do just enough to keep the fans appeased. They needed a frontline starter and a power bat in the offseason, but opted for the cheaper of the two available bats, and passed on the starter.
Anyway, they will probably make a deal at the trade deadline just for appearances sake, probably a reliever becase it would cost them the least in dollars and prospects.
There have been rumors that they were interested in Scott Downs, but I’m sure that’s just smoke and mirrors. As they did with Jason Bay, Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo, the Mets will go after the one player no other teams are interested in to avoid a bidding war.
