Another No-Name Keeps The Mets From A No-Hitter

Do you recognize the baseball player in the photograph to the left?  No?  Then welcome to the club.  The man in the Padres hat is San Diego’s backup centerfielder Chris Denorfia, and he just became the latest player to keep the Mets from finally recording their first no-hitter. Last night, during the second game of the day-night doubleheader between the Mets and the Padres, Chris Denorfia was given the start over regular centerfielder Tony Gwynn, [...]

A Lesson In Mets History

I’m a fan of history. Whether it be baseball or Mets history or the history of our nation, I love how history provides us with a template for the future. We tend to have short attention spans in this new media digital age. We tweet, surf the web and instant message while texting all at once. We Hulu a show that we could’ve easily watched a few nights before but our DVR was already pushing [...]

Oh, Give Me A Home

Citi Field, aged two, already has a past. Last year when we first saw the place, there were a lot of Brooklyn memorabilia and exhibits there. We knew that the Dodgers had moved to LA in the long ago fifties, so many of the visitors thought that something was wrong. And it was. Fred Wilpon, the owner of the Mets, was having flashbacks about his days as a Brooklyn fan, watching his old schoolmate Sandy [...]

Mark Cohoon Hurls Consecutive CG Shutouts

Last night while Jon Niese was throwing a complete game shutout against the San Diego Padres, another young southpaw was doing the same thing for the Mets Single-A affiliate, the Savannah Sand Gnats. Starting pitcher Mark Cohoon tossed his second consecutive complete game shutout on Thursday night to beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-0. Cohoon allowed just three hits and a walk over nine innings while striking out five. He currently leads the SAL league with a 1.44 ERA and in [...]

J-Niese Got A Gun

Born on the same day the Mets won their second World Series title, Jonathon Niese pitched like a champion last night against the San Diego Padres.  In shutting out the Padres, he allowed only one man to reach base all game, a double to centerfielder Chris Denorfia to lead off the third inning. Niese became the 34th pitcher in Mets history to throw a one-hitter, joining greats such as Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Dwight [...]

Santana Struggles, Niese Dazzles In Doubleheader Split

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.”  Charles Dickens When I set out [...]

Doug’s Dugout: Ike and That Strasburg Dude, Super Hero, Whatever…

In Doug’s Dugout today we broach the following:  A scout’s opinion on Ike, Stephen Strasburg, and other random mindless thoughts:   When Ike Davis was drafted off the campus of Arizona State, a scout described him as having, “light-tower power.”  In the minors his first year he had an outage, but as he has matured and found his way to Citi Field that assessment is as piercing as a flood light.   His game-winning majestic blast [...]

Mets And The Pitching Market

Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog reported that the Mets are scouting the Baltimore Orioles and had scouts in attendance during Kevin Millwood’s (0-7 4.64 ERA) start against the Yankees. It’s possible that they may also have some interest in Jeremy Guthrie (3-6 3.71 ERA) among other O’s starting pitchers. As has been widely reported already, the Mets have no interest in top of the rotation starters like Roy Oswalt or Cliff Lee. Apparently the Yankees do, and Ken Rosenthal [...]
