Mets Farm System Getting Long Overdue Recognition
A couple of key prospects rankings were released this week and the Mets are prominently featured in both. First, here is the 2010 Top 100 Prospects from Project Prospect, which features five Mets. 10 Fernando Martinez – LF/RF Plus power/good contact skills may allow him to ascend to stardom. some day. 48 Jon Niese – LHP Commands a sinking FB; CB and SL both get swing-throughs; Likely no. 3 starter. 57 Ike Davis – 1B Strong [...]

David Wright: No More Mr. Nice Guy
One thing the Mets have plenty of on this years squad is players who are itching to rebound from a 2009 season they all would like to forget. Everyone in the starting rotation will all have something to prove including Johan Santana who had surgery to remove bone spurs, John Maine who battled shoulder problems, and Oliver Perez who is coming back from knee surgery. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran are both hoping to put their [...]

Mets Sign A Rod; Too Bad It’s Barajas
Sorry about the title (and photo to the left), Mets fans. The Mets did sign “a Rod” over the weekend, but it happened to be Rod Barajas, who should take over as the #1 catcher for the Mets this season. After failing to sign other potential #1 catchers, most notably Bengie Molina, the Mets were able to sign Barajas to a one-year deal for a very reasonable dollar amount ($1 million, plus $1 million in [...]

Time To Step Up – Part 2, Infielders
Last week I wrote how it was time for the pitchers on this team to step up to plate for the upcoming 2010 season. This week I’ll be looking at how the infield needs to step up and make 2010 a successful season. Rod Barajas: With the signing of Rod Barajas we finally (hopefully) are done signing catchers and unless something drastic happens this spring Barajas is going to be the Mets starting catcher come [...]

Mets Will Have Over 50 Promotions In 2010
According to a team press release, the Mets will offer fans more than 50 promotion, theme, and heritage dates and special events, giving away more than 400,000 items. The big one in my opinion is the Mets Hall of Fame Induction on Sunday August 1st, when Frank Cashen, Dwight Gooden, Davey Johnson and Darryl Strawberry will be honored during a pre-game, on-field ceremony and the first 25,000 fans will receive a commemorative item. Other highlights of [...]

Low Expectations For 2010. And That’s Good.
One of the best westerns of all-time is ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.’ In one scene, Tuco, played by Eli Wallach, is getting the hell beat out of him by a soldier who is nearly three times his size. Beaten, injured and demoralized the bloody Tuco looks up at his assailant and speaks the words, “I like big men like you. When you fall you make more noise.” This reminds me of the [...]

Beltran Has No Hard Feelings, Reyes, Centerfield Battle
This post was updated from an original post today. Brian Costa of the Star-Ledger writes that Carlos Beltran arrived to camp this afternoon and that he walked with no noticeable limp when he entered the clubhouse and went into the trainer’s room, where Omar Minaya joined him a few minutes later. Adam Rubin added that Beltran was on a stationary bike with no pain the day after the surgery and had no pain. Who knows… Maybe [...]

You Can Cross Throwing Strikes Off The To-Do List
Marty Noble at MLB.com posted some great news this weekend and it seems that the Mets are going to make throwing strikes a top priority this spring with the hope that it carries over to the regular season come Opening Day. At least we now know why the Mets walked the second most batters in the majors last season… Apparently nobody told them they had to throw strikes… Luckily for us, Jerry Manuel won’t be taking any [...]

Poll Results: Mets First Base Outlook
A few days ago, my co-writer Danny Krieger wrote a nice post pitting the recently acquired Mike Jacobs against the incumbent Daniel Murphy. I decided to do a quick 4-day poll to see what our readers thought about the Mets first base situation going into the 2010 season. Here are those results: And the winner is… Daniel Murphy is the overwhelming choice for our readers, more than doubling the support that Mike Jacobs received. As [...]

The Song Remains The Same
Yesterday, Mets owner Fred Wilpon met with reporters and responded to some questions. I was intrigued, but not surprised to this particular line of questioning: Q: An author said you were selling the team because of the Madoff scandal (Bernie Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 felonies involving a Ponzi scheme). Were those claims off-base? Wilpon: I’ve always said, if it’s up to me, my family will be involved for the next generations. That’s all I [...]

Another Hip Surgery Wipes Out Carlos Delgado
ESPN is now confirming and earlier report that Carlos Delgado had hip surgery this week — his second such surgery in less than a year — and will be sidelined at least four months. Delgado’s agent David Sloane, said the former Mets first baseman intends play again this season. According to the NY Posts, Delgado also underwent microfracture surgery to repair his hip socket on Wednesday. “The prognosis is that Carlos Delgado will be the Carlos Delgado of old [...]
