Victor Martinez To The Red Sox
We’re less than two hours aways from the end of the trade deadline and not a peep from Omar and the Mets, worse yet not even a tweet.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today has tweeted:
The Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from Indians
This has been confirmed by MLB Network.
I’m surprised that Victor Martinez isn’t a Met. He seems to fit the mold of everything the Mets could use right now.
- He can catch and play first base.
- He’s a switch hitter who makes great contact and has a high OBP.
- Has a great line drive swing with good power that would play well at CitiField.
- He’s a team leader with a bulldog mentality.
- He comes with a 2010 option for a mere $7 million dollars.
Too bad…

Congratulations to the Red Sox on their acquisition of Victor Martinez. I would have liked him on the Mets for all the reasons you mentioned. The only negative about Martinez is that he needs to be in a league with the DH. Last year, Martinez was hurt and missed half the season. When he did play, he only hit .278 (after three consecutive .300 seasons) with a mere two home runs. This year, he is wearing down again. These are his batting averages in 2009 per month:
April: .386
May: .321
June: .240
July: .175
If Martinez comes to a league with no DH, I can see those patterns continuing, especially now that is on the wrong side of age 30.
That being said, a less than 100% Victor Martinez would still be an offensive upgrade over Brian Schneider, Omir Santos and Daniel Murphy. He just has too many durability issues and can’t seem to stay productive over the full schedule anymore.
