Midseason Recap: Does The Future Look Bright?

Including today’s game with the Phillies, the Mets have now played 81 games.  They’ve reached the midway point of the season battered and bruised, but still breathing.  Their record stands at 39-42, leaving them four games behind first place Philadelphia.  Somehow, they’ve managed to stay competitive in the standings while occasionally looking pathetic on the field.  What does the Magic 8-ball have in store for the second half?  Before we shake it up for the [...]

Tony B At It Again, Cora Frustrated, Ollie’s Follies

It looks like Mets assistant GM, Tony Bernazard is back to his back-stabbing ways, and this time it is Jerry Manuel who is lining up to be his next victim. Bill Madden of the Daily News writes, Nevertheless, there’s still no getting around the fact the Mets are presently a depleted mess, plagued not only by this unfathomable rash of injuries to their most important players, but by the same inner turmoil that eventually led to Willie [...]

Oliver Perez Set To Return On Wednesday

According to espn.com, Oliver Perez is set to return to the Mets to make a start on Wednesday night against the Dodgers at Citi Field.  Although he claims to be healthy, his latest effort on the mound seems to suggest that not much has changed since we last saw him in New York.  He continues to be the master of the conga line, allowing opposing hitters to walk freely around the bases.  He threw 92 [...]

Cutting Darren O’Day Was A Costly Mistake

You may remember that back on April 19th, the Mets purchased the contract of pitcher Nelson Figueroa from Buffalo to make a start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Figgy pitched a decent game allowing just three runs, but the Mets lost 4-2. Immediately after the game, the Mets designated Figueroa for assignment and came close to losing him as Figueroa refused the assignment and opted to test the free agent waters. Nothing happened for Figgy so [...]

Phillies Rough Up Livan And Beat The Mets 7-2

The Phillies got the fireworks started early on Friday night, and before Livan Hernandez could get an out in the fourth inning, he was out of the game and heading for the showers. Livan was pulled from the game after allowing 7 earned runs on 10 hits and 4 walks. It was ugly, and he simply didn’t have it working tonight. Hernandez had pitched well recently, so it was unfortunate to see him get tagged this hard. Better [...]

Manuel Had His Team Meeting; Now It’s My Turn!

Earlier this week, Jerry Manuel had a team meeting with his players after the Mets dropped their fifth straight game, a 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.  They had been playing sloppy, lethargic baseball and had fallen two games under .500.  In the nearly half hour meeting, Manuel claimed the following: “The whole key was to say that we have enough.  We have enough.  We’ve got enough in here to do what we need to [...]
